Bernie Sanders cancels campaign events for artery blockage surgery

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, 78, has cancelled campaign events until further notice after undergoing surgery.

Mr Sanders was treated in hospital for an arterial blockage after experiencing chest pain at an event in Nevada on Tuesday.

An adviser for the Vermont senator said he was in “good spirits” and will be resting over the next few days.

Mr Sanders had earlier announced his campaign has raised over $25m (£20m).

Senior adviser Jeff Weaver said in a statement: “Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted.”

Mr Weaver said Mr Sanders is “conversing and in good spirits” and will be “resting up over the next few days”.

A stent is a small mesh tube used to help keep arteries open. Receiving stents is “a minimally invasive procedure”, typically with a short recovery time, the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute says.

It is unclear how long Mr Sanders will need to recover from his surgery, and whether it will affect his appearance in the next Democratic debate on 15 October.

Polls show Mr Sanders is third in the Democratic race behind Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and former Vice-President Joe Biden.

His $25.3m haul from July through September was the largest of any Democratic candidate in a quarter so far.

If Mr Sanders were to win the presidency, he would become the oldest person in the US to hold the office.

Mr Sanders had been in Las Vegas to participate in a gun safety forum on Wednesday, along with some other 2020 candidates.

Many of his presidential rivals wished him a “speedy recovery”.

Mr Sanders on Tuesday announced a $1.3m television advertising purchase in Iowa, but US media report that on Wednesday, his campaign began cancelling the ads. It is unclear why. Iowa hosts the first voting contest in the US presidential race.

The senator’s health made headlines last month as well, when he cancelled three events in South Carolina after losing his voice, taking two days to recover.

Who is Bernie Sanders?

Mr Sanders labels himself a Democratic socialist, which he has defined as someone who seeks to “create an economy that works for all, not just the very wealthy”.

He is the longest-serving independent in congressional history, but competes for the Democratic nomination as he says standing as a third-party candidate would diminish his chances of winning the presidency.

When he ran for the Democratic nomination in 2016, he was Hillary Clinton’s closest rival.

His 2020 platform has focused largely on his universal health coverage plan, Medicare for All. The policy has also become a key point of contention between Democrats during the last debates, with moderates like Mr Biden criticising it as unfeasible and too expensive. BBC News

Doesmatter Vhore who was convicted for killing four commercial farmers in Mashonaland Central Province said he feels like he is still suitable to stay in the society just like other people who did not commit crimes.

The murderer committed the crime with his other two accomplices who were also slapped with the capital punishment.

Capital punishment also known as the death penalty, is a government sanction practice whereby a person is killed by the State as a punishment for a crime.

They were sent to the gallows after the court found them guilty of murder with actual intent.

In an interview during the recent tour of actors, musicians and soccer legends tour of the Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, Vhore said:

“I still think we should be given an opportunity to have a second chance.

“The crime was committed in 2011 and we were sentenced to death last year.

“We have been writing appealing letters but to no avail.

“I am living in fear because I don’t know when I will be hanged.

“When the gates are opened I always think they have come to take me.”

The condemned inmate also told this publication that he wishes to eat one more proper meal before his death.

“I miss good food my brother, here we are starving.

“I pray one day I will get a chance to eat good food.

“Being on death sentence mwana wamai zvakaoma,” he said.

Zimbabwe has not had an execution for over a decade and President Emmerson Mnangagwa has indicated that nobody will be hanged under his watch.

He is a strong campaigner against capital punishment. H-Metro

Jaseph Meki, 34, Clever Mugoli, 30, Godwill Mambeu, 34, and Patrick Madondo, 41, appeared before Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye charged with robbery.

The State led by Sebastian Mutizirwa denied the accused’s application for bail indicating that the matter was yet to be finalised and chances were very high that if the accused persons are granted bail, they were going to interfere with the witness.

Prosecutor Mutizirwa also said that the accused person if granted bail they are a flight risk.

Allegations are that on September 22, the accused persons together with other unknown accused persons who are still at large, hatched a plan to rob the complainant Nomatter Mukomva at her house in Waterfalls.

The State alleges that the accused persons scaled over a precast wall and they found the complainant at the house.

They misrepresented to her indicating that they were police officers tracking a stolen cellphone, the complainant could not withstand her fear and she ran away from the accused person’s and jumped into the next yard.

It is the State case that the accused person’s pursued the complainant and apprehended and assaulted him with opens hands.

The court heard that the accused persons forced-marched her out of the next yard while the other accused persons entered the complainant house where they stole a safe containing US$33 000, RTGS$ 600, house title deeds, lease agreement forms, Itai Makomva’s passport, share certificate from Econet, Inscor, Padenga, Casava and Old Mutual documents which were inside one of the complainant’s bedroom and went away.

Samson Mukululi Nhubu, 35, pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.

In his defence, he told the court that the complainant is making false accusations against him.

He also mentioned that the complainant should have screamed and reported the matter immediately since there were many people at the company.

The matter was deferred to today for trial Continuation.

The State opened up its case by calling its witness, who is the victim, who alleged that on August 22 this year, Nhubu met with him at Total Samora Machel where he wanted to talk about a task Nhubu wanted to give him.

He was told that there was a small job which was for painting and fitting his father’s house which he had got for him.

He then took him to his workplace at Eastlea to discuss the job.

He also told the court that when they arrived at the workplace, Nhubu asked him if he was a secret keeper and if he was able to hug a man.

Nhubu then asked the complainant to hug him and he complied.

He then proceeded to forcefully remove his trousers before sodomising the complainant.

After he had finished, he asked him to put on his clothes and drove him back to where he took him.

The victim said he could not scream for help since he was afraid of being killed after he saw three man that were around when the alleged offence occurred. H-Metro

UK based gospel diva Ivy Kombo is this week expected to renew her romance with Zimbabweans across the Limpopo with a series of workshops.

According to the talented diva’s advance team in Gauteng, the diva is expected in Johannesburg today ahead of mega church conference ending Sunday.

It will be running under the theme: “How To Operate Under An Open Heaven”.

However, Ivy won’t proceed to Zimbabwe after her South African visit.

Socialite and events management guru Faith “Chihera” Taruvinga is part of the advance team set to welcome and host the talented diva.

Speaking from her base in the UK, Ivy confirmed the tour.

“I will arrive in Johannesburg on Wednesday and spend whole day at our Pretoria church branch (Upperview Ministries International.)

“On Thursday morning, we will be at Kingdom Family Worship Centre in Polokwane, a ministry led by Apostle Chris Masingi and his blessed wife Prophetess Florence Masingi.

“Bishop-General Addy Kasi is the invited guest speaker while I will lead worship together with local worship team.

“Zimbabwe’s Tatenda Mahachi will join us there,” she said.

She, however, said the visit was more on engaging her their followers in South Africa and not shows.

“’ The visit is more on conference and not concert related.

“The conference ends Sunday,” she said.

On her message of hope to Zimbabwe and other nationalities who were affected by the recent xenophobic attacks, she said:

“I have no real experience on South Africa so cannot say much to those residing there but I want them to know that God sees them and we have them in our prayers.

“They are a blessed lot working for their families and we salute them. We condemn the attacks on innocent people as we saw on media.”

She, however, made it clear that not all South Africans were of violent nature.

“Not all South Africans have this attitude but the few really paint an otherwise beautiful nation dark.

“The love of God must bring nations together especially neigbours like Zimbabwe and South Africa.

“Zimbabweans are of good hospitality and are known even in the UK and other countries for their hard work and kindness.

“’They deserve the same treatment. We pray things will be ok. The scenes we saw , especially when Bishop-General Addy called me when he saw a person having been set aflame and was liberally running with the flame, burning like mere paper, made us cry.

“’The Lord will pour His love and heal His people.”

Asked whether she would proceed to Zimbabwe for a mini visit, Ivy added:

“I am not crossing to Zimbabwe this time due to a heavy schedule.

“Well, I was there just recently. I would have been there preparing for Nguvayakwana which has now been postponed due to the passing on of the former President Mugabe. My condolences.”

Music wise, Ivy said she was also doing well.

“I have just completed the album Like Mt Zion which has a video concerning Cyclone Idai which was received overwhelmingly by many in Zimbabwe and outside.

“I am doing another video on the song I Know Who You Are.”

She also praised her visitors in South Africa for the honour they showed them.

“As for Apostle Masingi and his wife, they are changing South Africa with the word of God.

“There is a special anointing on them. We pray for them and it’s an honour to be guests of honour at their annual conference.” H-Metro
