Two teenagers from Bulawayo have been sentenced to a combined 30 months in prison for robbing a soldier of valuables worth over $1 500.
Nhlanhla Ncube (19) and Simelinkosi Ncube (19) both of Cowdray Park suburb together with an unnamed accomplice who is still at large, stabbed Mr Stephen Mudenda stationed at Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) 4th Brigade on his left hand before robbing him of two pairs of army uniforms, a cell phone, R 300, US$10 and 30 tins of canned beef worth R500.
Mr Mudenda suffered a deep cut that stretched about four centimetres across his hand.
The duo had pleaded not guilty to robbery when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Shepherd Munjanja.
The magistrate sentenced Nhlanhla to an effective 15 months in prison and added one month from a previous conviction. He will serve a total of 16 months in prison.
“Accused number one I sentence you to 18 months in prison and three months have been suspended on condition that you restitute the complainant $500 before October 31.
In addition, one month has been suspended on condition that CRB 3215/18 (previous conviction case number) is brought to effect,” he said.
“Accused number two I sentence you to 12 months in prison and three months have been suspended on condition that you restitute the complainant $500 before October 31. In addition, four months have been suspended on condition that CRB 2365/19 is brought to effect.”
Simelinkosi was sentenced to an effective nine months in prison and four months were added from a previous conviction. She will serve a total of 13 months in prison.
Prosecuting, Mr Nathan Marime said on August 21 this year at around 3AM, Mr Mudenda was walking along Herbert Chitepo Street towards Pick n Pay Hyper when he was approached by the trio.
“The accused persons asked the complainant where he was going before demanding his bag,” he said.
Mr Mudenda refused and Nhlanhla stabbed him on his left hand.
Fearing for his life, Mr Mudenda surrendered his bag.
“Simelinkosi joined in the scuffle by grabbing the complainant’s satchel and sleeping bag,” said the prosecutor.
Nhlanhla and his other accomplice searched Mr Mudenda’s satchel and left with his belongings.
Mr Mudenda reported the matter at Bulawayo Central Police Station leading to the arrest of Nhlanhla and Simelinkosi. The Chronicle
A Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) official stationed at Plumtree Border Post has been arrested for allegedly forging customs documents to facilitate the smuggling of 50 cars into the country, prejudicing the State of US$432 767, 54 and $1, 4 million in potential revenue.
Norest Ushe
Norest Ushe of Zimra Cottages in the border town fraudulently accessed his employer’s data capture system and entered 50 cars that had been smuggled into the country and facilitated their registration.
Ushe appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Shepherd Munjanja facing charges of fraud and criminal abuse of duty as a public official as defined in section 174 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
He was remanded in custody for ruling on his bail application.
Between May 2017 and June this year, Ushe was working at the Zimra private imports section where he was responsible for the clearance of private goods before he was moved to the scanning section.
Prosecuting, Mr Mufaro Mageza said while working at the private imports section, he was issued with a password which enabled him to capture, view and print customs clearances certificates (CCCs) in the Zimra computerised system.
“The SAP profile password which he had until September 26, 2019, was deactivated after investigations of misuse. Between May and September 24 this year, Ushe clandestinely captured into the Zimra system, information of 50 cars smuggled into the country thereby generating an equipment number which if punched would display the particulars of the vehicle and enable printing CCC on the serialised forms at any Zimra station or printing of protected format document on bond paper,” said Mr Mageza.
The court heard that despite Ushe’s redeployment to the scanning section where he was not supposed to capture data into the Zimra system, he allegedly continued capturing data of the smuggled vehicles and facilitated their registration until September 26 when his password was deactivated.
Investigations were conducted and it was established that Ushe fraudulently entered 50 smuggled cars into the Zimra system. The State lost potential revenue of US$432 767,54 for 39 cars and $1 469 791, 58 for the other 11 vehicles.
On his arrest, Ushe’s house was searched and six clearance certificates as well as two Zimra date stamps, which he signed for on May 9, 2017 and August 2, 2018, were recovered.

LONDON – The Zimbabwe Fashion Showcase (UK) has always been a place of effortless style, class and an overflow of talent, and this year was no different.
Chiedza Ziyambe and Ngoni Tshekeche
The tradeshow, which ran under the theme #ThisIsAfrica, yet again redefined what a fashion show can be when you step outside of the norm. The organisers captured the audience with their out of the box creativity and imagination, coupled with a fine-dining experience.

For a second year running, the team did away with the axiomatic catwalk – holding it in one of the most exclusive private clubs in the UK that offered a unique, magical and perennial enclave to dine, entertain and party.
Awe-inspiring designs
This edition saw breathtaking craftsmanship and meticulous creations, with standout designs from Samuel Kaiser’s innovative collection which was inspired by the Amasunzu, a creative and unconventional traditional Rwandan hairstyle that dates back to the 20th Century.
While it was banned because it was considered pagan, it remains a symbol of pride worn mostly by Rwandan men and young unmarried girls. It also represented different roles and stages in the life of women and men.
Samuel, dubbed the ‘comeback’ king, lost his entire collection in January worth approximately £500,000 in a suspected arson attack, weeks before he was due to showcase his work at Paris Fashion Week.
However, his signature piece, created using reusable materials, left the audience awestruck. The on-trend ‘architectural’ dress, inspired by Queen Elizabeth 1, showed his inexhaustible imagination that pushes the boundaries of fashion.
Isabella Sitsha also made wearable art look like the next best thing.
With designs inspired by her home country Zimbabwe, her Woman collection emphasised why avant-garde designs are such a popular, experimental and unorthodox form of art that never lose their place in the fashion industry. In a few more years she has the potential to stand at the pinnacle of the African fashion market.

Millicent Poku, who turned her hobby of sewing into a business, made the collection she produced in just over a week look like absolute perfection. Each piece custom-made, timeless and effortless. There’s a lot more untapped potential and she will no doubt be a creative leader in the industry very soon.
Sandra Chinogurei’s bridal wear is an example of a contemporary bridal brand that pays painstaking attention to detail. Each design exuded class, style and elegance. Her bridal jumpsuit was edgy and perfect for a woman wanting to step away from the traditional wedding gown experience.
Chipo Musa’s 18 years as a crochet designer allowed the audience to take in all the intricate swimwear pieces. All carefully handmade in different colours and styles. Her collection was playful and brought variety.
This is Africa brought showstopper moments
For four seasons ZFS has had riveting shows and this year they stepped it up a notch, adding an auction to the programme presented by auctioneer Sam Onigbanjo.
Sam left the audience in stitches with his sense of humour, while masterfully persuading them to bid for a good cause. The auction raised approximately £2500 and all proceeds will go to DVIP- Domestic Violence Intervention Project.
The charity has been supporting women and children for 25 years and ensuring those affected by domestic violence are able to seek help. With a cross-functional team across London, they support women, children and families.
Some of the auction items included six medical-grade skin peels sponsored by Dr Mary Thompson. This prize was sold for over £500.
Mimi’s Organics sponsored a range of skin care products. Aloe4life put together a hamper of aloe Vera products, while Golden Image Spa were giving a lucky winner a spa and sauna experience.

Chiedza Ziyambe also sponsored a large hamper with items that had a personalised House of Hohwa jacket designed by one of last year’s showcasers, Kuda Matiza. It also had skin products and three pairs of shoes which sold for £200. Other prizes donated included a hat from Milliner Rose Collins and a hamper from Olinda Chapel-Nkomo.
Hosted by musician and TV presenter, Ben Ofoedu and Tidi Kwidini, the co-hosts brought life to the event and kept the audience entertained and engaged. The former Phats & Small singer also performed two of his popular hits – Turn Around and Feel Good, leaving attendees wanting more.

If there ever was a celebration of art in all its forms, this fashion show covered all bases, with multi-talented saxophonist, Jermaine Jones performing almost every genre you can imagine – who knew afrobeats could sound so sultry on the saxophone – now we know.
DJ, Welly Tee’s wide range of music and ability to gauge what the audience wanted to hear set the tone and guests enjoyed moments in between on the dance floor, with tunes ranging from Mafikizolo, Winky D and LadySmith Black Mambazo.
This year’s event took place at Tramp which has for half a century hosted illustrious guests such as Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Naomi Campbell, Drake and Rihanna.
Sponsors and partners included Molah Media, Loma Media, Peter Cripps Photography, Tichpfupsphotography, Retreat 2 Relax and Bespoke Petals & Events.
Next year’s event is scheduled for 26 September 2020. Designers are encouraged to start sending in their portfolios to [email protected].
Businessman Wicknell Chivayo took another giant step towards quashing all the cases against or involving him before the courts after a judge granted $1 000 bail pending appeal to the former Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) board chairman Stanley Kazhanje.
Stanley Kazhanje and Wicknell Chivayo
Kazhanje was convicted and sentenced to an effective one-year jail term for allegedly concealing a US$10 000 payment from Chivayo, the Intratrek Zimbabwe chief executive. It is the reasons given by Justice Amy Tsanga in granting bail however that will have cheered both Kazhanje and Chivayo.
Justice Tsanga noted that Kazhanje may not have disclosed his past relations with Intratrek but it equally could not have been said on the basis of facts that were argued, that he had an interest in the transaction, being the Gwanda Solar Project.
“Strictly speaking, there was no evidence placed before the court a quo that he had a personal interest in the Gwanda solar project,” she said.
“The prospects of success on conviction are, in my view, therefore, not manifestly doomed to failure. If there is a possibility of conviction being set aside, it stands to reason that so will sentence.”
Kazhanje, who is appealing against both conviction and sentence, at the High Court had applied for bail pending appeal at the same court. Justice Tsanga agreed with the defence arguments that Kazhanje’s prospects of success on appeal were high.
His grounds of appeal ranged from challenging the onus which he said was wrongly placed on him to prove his defence, the correctness of the charge and the finding that he had not disclosed his personal interest in the Gwanda solar project transaction.
But the State, which was listed as the respondent, vehemently opposed Kazhanje’s application. It argued that the trial court did not misdirect itself as the evidence was overwhelming that there had been no disclosure.
It is the State’s case that on October 23 2015, Kazhanje signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract of a 100 megawatt solar power station project, in which he received US$10 000 from Intratrek under unclear circumstances.
The trial court also heard that because of Kazhanje’s actions, ZPC paid over $4 million to Intratrek as advance payment, despite the company failing to meet the terms of the contract.
New developments … Intratrek director Wicknell Chivayo in front of the newly-built engineers’ office block
Last month a ‘ray of light’ in the saga emerged as construction at the Gwanda Solar Farm resumed with Chivayo personally on site to supervise progress. This was after High Court judge Tawanda Chitapi’s ruling wherein he ordered Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Intratrek Zimbabwe to find common ground with a view of fast tracking completion of the solar power project.
The judge submitted that ZPC and Intratrek must not “merry dance in boardrooms and court rooms but must go to successfully implement the project for the benefit of Zimbabwe” adding that the power to be generated was not for use by Wicknell Chivayo and Intratrek but for the nation at large.
Fenced off … The 200-hectare site of Gwanda power plant has been fenced off
ZPC had a pending appeal at the Supreme Court whose motive Justice Chitapi described as “improper.” “It is disgraceful that national projects are stalled by contracting parties having merry dances in boardrooms instead of project sites and seeing the project to fruition,” the judge said.
“The public wants electricity for use at home and in industries. The public is not interested in bickering for self-interest and egos on the part of State actors and their contractors.”
If ZPC wished to cancel the contract, the judge said, it had to pay Intratrek US$25 million dollars in damages.
“It has already been observed that the subject matter of the contract is of national importance. It is of public interest. The public wants electricity for use at home and in industries.
The public is not interested in bickering for self-interest and egos on the part of State actors and their contractors,” Justice Chitapi said. Nehanda Radio

Two South Africa-based siblings are on the run after they allegedly fatally assaulted their father in Mwenezi after accusing him of witchcraft.

According to the police, Clayton (22) and Langton (20) of Hlupeko Village under Chief Mavetese allegedly whipped their father, Mr Nelson Tom Moyo (51) all over the body with sjamboks resulting in his death.
Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred on Wednesday last week at around midnight.
She said the body of the deceased was taken to Neshuro District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
“I can confirm receiving a report of murder involving a father and his two sons. The suspects allegedly assaulted their father with sjamboks over allegations of witchcraft.
“They fled from the scene and we have launched a manhunt,” said Chief Insp Mazula.
She said the siblings arrived in the country from South Africa around midnight.
Upon arrival at their rural home, Chief Insp Mazula said, they found Mr Moyo away as he had gone to the nearby Nkomo Business Centre to drink beer.
She said the pair hid behind the kitchen door in order to ambush him on his return.
“When Mr Moyo arrived, the suspects approached him and accused him of possessing some artefacts to perform acts of witchcraft.
“They force-marched Mr Moyo to his bedroom hut where they instructed him to take out his witchcraft material (which they said were white, red and black in colour) so that they could destroy them,” said Chief Inspector Mazula.
She said Mr Moyo only managed to bring out white and red tools and the two suspects then took turns to assault him demanding the release of the black material.
The police spokesperson said the beatings only stopped when Mr Moyo was unconscious. After the assault, the suspects disappeared.
Their mother reported the matter to Mwenezi police and by then Mr Moyo had died.
Chief Inspector Mazula appealed for anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact any nearest police station.
Sources close to the case said the brothers alleged that their father was using the black material to bewitch them. The Chronicle
Then French side AS Nancy midfielder Marvellous Nakamba presenting his club jersey to Prophet Blessing Chiza at Eagle Life Ministries during a Sunday service in 2014
By Sikhumbuzo Moyo
ZIMBABWE’s latest export to the English Premier League, Marvelous Nakamba’s fairytale rise in Europe was prophesied by Bulawayo based Prophet Blessing Chiza of Eagle life Assembly five years ago.
Then French side AS Nancy midfielder Marvellous Nakamba presenting his club jersey to Prophet Blessing Chiza at Eagle Life Ministries during a Sunday service in 2014
In a video footage posted on Prophet Chiza’s official Facebook page (Dr Prophet B S Chiza), the Eagle Life Assembly leader is seen making the prophecy on 25 May, 2014 holding Nakamba’s football jersey before praying for the player while laying his hands on the then Nancy FC player.
“You are going to other big teams in Europe, from Nancy I see you rising, God is going to take you. If this does not happen, people will not know God. It has to happen according or against their imagination. Young man, you shall be very rich. He (Nakamba) now believes in the anointing of God,” Prophet Chiza is heard saying.
He then goes on to pray for Nakamba in which he says Zimbabwe’s football shall rise not because of traditional beliefs or juju but due to the power of God.
In that year Nakamba joined Dutch side Vittesse, making 69 appearances before packing his bags for Belgium to join Clube Brugge where he made 49 appearances and this year became the fourth Zimbabwean player to turn out for an EPL side, signing for Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa coach Dean Smith has hailed Nakamba and feels he is close to pushing the same levels as brilliant teammate John McGinn, according to a report carried by The Boot Room (TBR).
McGinn, 24, has been the outstanding individual at the Midlands club following the return to the top-flight and he’s already weighed in with three league goals.
The Scotland international is setting the bar for the rest of his teammates and continues to go from strength to strength.
Nakamba has now managed to break into the starting eleven.
The defensive midfielder has played every minute of the last three consecutive league matches, including the 2-2 draw with Burnley at the weekend.
Smith feels he was excellent last Saturday at home to Burnley and delivered an exciting verdict.
“There are people who are starting to catch him (McGinn) up as well. I thought Nakamba was very good [against Burnley], only his third start. First-half he was pushing John McGinn,” Smith said, as quoted by the club’s official Youtube account.
TBR’s View:
Nakamba looks like he could be a mainstay in the team moving forward and is forming a decent midfield trio, with McGinn and captain Jack Grealish playing just in front of him.
Smith has managed to fit a solid combination in the centre of the park and defensively there can’t be too many complaints.
They do need to try be more efficient in attack though and there are issues in the centre-forward position right now.
Nakamba certainly appears to be one of the picks from the club’s new summer additions and has a great athleticism that suits English football.
The 25-year-old will only get better as he adjusts to his surroundings and he could have a busy job putting out fires against a dangerous attacking Norwich side on Saturday. The Chronicle
Warning: this article contains details of domestic violence which some people might find upsetting
“I was banging on windows, screaming. Every time I’d scream, he’d put his fist in my throat – I couldn’t breathe.”
BETHANY MARCHANT
Bethany Marchant was subjected to a violent attack by her then-partner Stefan Carr.
On Monday he was jailed for 11 years and three months for the assault on Bethany and an earlier attack on a previous partner.
Bethany, 24, says she is speaking out to encourage others to seek help if they’re in a violent relationship.
“Get out there, have your say, and don’t be pushed down by these people. They belong in prison, they don’t deserve to be here,” she tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.
Bethany with her ex-partner Stefan Carr
Bethany and Stefan had been together for seven months.
She says there were “no warning signs” that he was a violent man and he was “charming and so kind” to her.
It was the night Stefan, from Castleford, confessed to cheating on Bethany that “all the torture started”.
A long argument turned into a sustained series of attacks on Bethany – which were caught on the CCTV at his home on 5 May.
“He locked the door, took my phone off me, he would suffocate me, strangle me,” Bethany says.
“This went on for hours until eventually he got a ready-made noose from a chest of drawers and hung me from the door for three minutes.”
She says he dropped her to the floor and she “was vomiting everywhere”.
Carr’s house was covered by CCTV cameras he had installed which recorded his assault
Bethany says she managed to persuade Carr to take her to the hospital – but instead, on the drive, he told her he was going to drown her “in a nearby reservoir”.
The police then arrived – which she says was due to the neighbours.
“The neighbours had seen Stefan with a knife at my throat through the window and they’d phoned the police.
“They made another call once they could see Stefan putting me in the van. If they hadn’t rung the police, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Stefan Carr admitted four counts of assault and one of attempted assault
Carr was jailed for four counts of assault and one of attempted assault – two of the charges related to attacks on his previous partner.
Bethany says hearing the prison sentence for Carr “was hard”.
“It didn’t feel like closure. I thought immediately I would feel better and I didn’t.”
But she adds “it was a relief” and that “a big weight had been lifted”.
“I’d been holding it in since May, it was nice to finally have my say.”
According to statistics from the ONS, two million adults – including 1.3 million women – aged 16 to 59 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year up to March – an increase of 23% from the previous year.
Mum-of-one Bethany says “it’s been really difficult” but moving forward she “can now seek help”.
She says she wants to get the message out to “people who are suffering in relationships that there is hope out there”.
“You just need to be brave and seek help. Get out there, have your say, and don’t be pushed down by these people.” BBC News

Two-time defending champions New Zealand scored nine tries to thrash Canada and record their second convincing win at the 2019 World Cup.
Rugby World Cup: France beat USA & All Blacks thrash Canada
Brothers Beauden, Jordie and Scott Barrett all went over as the All Blacks hit this World Cup’s highest score.
They were given a penalty try after four minutes and Jordie Barrett, Sonny Bill Williams and Beauden Barrett also crossed before half-time.
Scott Barrett, Rieko Ioane, Brad Weber and Shannon Frizell also scored.
There were four tries in the first 10 minutes at the start of the second half as New Zealand tore their opponents’ defence apart.
The All Blacks move up to second in Pool B, one point behind Italy – out in front courtesy of two bonus-point wins – who they play after facing Namibia on Sunday.
The victory extends New Zealand’s winning run at World Cups to 16 matches – their last defeat was to France in the 2007 quarter-final – and continues their record of having never lost a pool game in the competition.
All Blacks clinical at both ends of pitch
This may not have been the most balanced encounter of the tournament – pitting the winners of the past two World Cups against the second-lowest ranked team in the tournament – but New Zealand’s attack was devastating.
They powered over the line inside 70 seconds but Canada were able to hold the ball up.
However it wasn’t long before the first try arrived and it did so in typically imposing fashion as New Zealand forced the Canada scrum back over the line under their own posts for a penalty try.
The All Blacks had threats throughout their team with fly-half Richie Mo’unga, who also kicked eight conversions, pulling the strings and Beauden Barrett a constant menace from his new position of full-back.
The Barrett brothers became the first sibling trio to start in a World Cup for New Zealand and the family hat-trick would have been completed even earlier had Scott not dropped the ball when over the line in the first half.
Beauden also had the chance to score a 10th All Blacks try, and take the team’s total to 70, but he inexplicably spilled the ball in the final minute when looking certain to score.
On the rare occasions New Zealand did have to defend they did so clinically, turning the ball over to repel Canada when they ventured into their 22.
New Zealand saw off one of their main rivals for the trophy, South Africa, in their first pool game and this emphatic win continues their ominous momentum as they bid for a third consecutive World Cup.
Conditions were very difficult – reaction
New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen: “We’ve just got to take that first 20 minutes of the second half and turn it into 80 minutes. If we can do that, we won’t be too far away.
“During that period, the team really came together and played good, controlled rugby.
“In really difficult conditions, the humidity is unbelievable and whilst people at home will be wondering why we dropped a few balls, it’s very, very difficult.”
The best stats from New Zealand’s win
New Zealand have won each of their last 16 Rugby World Cup matches, the longest run by any side in the tournament’s history, while they also boast a 100% win rate in pool stage matches at the World Cup (30/30).
Canada failed to score a single point for the second time in a Rugby World Cup game (0-20 v South Africa in 1995)
This is the 32nd time a match has been won by 60+ points at the Rugby World Cup, with New Zealand winning 13 of those matches, more than twice as many occasions as any other side (England, Australia both five).
Sonny Bill Williams and Sam Whitelock have each won their last 16 Rugby World Cup games, equalling Keven Mealamu for the all-time record of consecutive wins at the tournament.
Rieko Ioane has scored 24 tries in 27 Tests for the All Blacks; no other player has scored more than 18 in Tests since the winger made his debut in November 2016.
Richie Mo’unga slotted each of his eight kicks – only Leon MacDonald (12/12 v Tonga in 2003) has slotted more without missing for the All Blacks in a World Cup match.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association over a tweet he sent to team-mate Benjamin Mendy.
Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva also played together at Monaco
Silva compared Mendy to the character on a packet of Conguitos – a sweet brand available in Spain and Portugal.
The Portugal player, 25, is alleged to have committed an “aggravated breach” of FA rules as it included reference “expressed or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin”.
Silva has until 9 October to respond.
The post was published at 12:44 BST on 22 September but was deleted at 13:30, although Silva later tweeted: “Can’t even joke with a friend these days.”
The FA subsequently contacted City for their observations, while Silva has written to the governing body to say he regrets the fact his social media post may have unintentionally caused offence.
Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out criticised the post and urged the FA to act, adding that “racist stereotypes are never acceptable as ‘banter'”.
In a statement on Wednesday, the FA said Silva’s activity is alleged to have been “insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute”.
Silva has been repeatedly defended by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who said it would be a “mistake” to punish his playmaker for the tweet.
England forward Raheem Sterling supported Silva against accusations of racism, saying it was “a situation between two friends”.
Mendy has also written in support of Silva, saying he did not take offence at the tweet.
France defender Mendy and Silva are close friends and played together at Monaco before both joined City in 2017.
A previous video of Silva joking with Mendy has also been passed on to the FA. BBC Sports
Peter Sissons, the former BBC and ITN newsreader and Question Time host, has died at the age of 77.
Peter Sissons: Former BBC, ITN and Channel 4 newsreader dies at 77
Sissons joined ITN in the 1960s before moving to the BBC in 1989 to present Question Time and the Six O’Clock News.
BBC director general Tony Hall described him as “one of the great television figures of his time”.
Tributes also came from such figures as Piers Morgan and Tony.
Peter Sissons was a journalist of exceptional talent, commitment and integrity. He was fearless but objective, always on top of his subject and an immensely likeable personality. I extend my deepest sympathy to Sylvia and all his family -Tony Blair.
— Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (@InstituteGC) October 2, 2019
Good Morning Britain host Morgan hailed him as “an excellent journalist and TV newsreader, and splendidly combative and amusing man”, while BBC presenter Simon McCoy said Sissons was “a great journalist and a fine presenter”.
Born in Liverpool in 1942, Sissons went to school with John Lennon, George Harrison and Paul McCartney. He studied at Oxford University, but returned to Liverpool to work as a bus conductor in the summer holidays – and later said the experience of dealing with difficult customers prepared him for handling difficult interviewees.
His journalistic career began when he joined ITN in 1964 as a writer, and he became a reporter three years later.
As a foreign correspondent, he was wounded by gunfire in Biafra in 1968. He was later promoted to ITN’s news editor and then industrial editor before becoming a presenter of ITN’s News at One in 1978.
When Channel 4 was launched in 1982, he was chosen to present their nightly news programme, and during his time as anchor, Channel 4 News won three consecutive Bafta Awards.
In 1989, he interviewed the Iranian ambassador about the fatwa issued to author Salman Rushsdie, and admitted in his autobiography that he found it “very hard” to keep his anger from showing. That interview resulted in the fatwa being extended to him, meaning he and his family needed 24-hour protection.
After joining the BBC later that year, he took over from Sir Robin Day as host of Question Time, which he hosted for four years, and also went on to present the Nine O’Clock News and 10 O’Clock News.
“He was a gold standard broadcaster,” said BBC News presenter Huw Edwards. “For a decade or more, he was the face of Channel 4 News, and he really was an outstanding interviewer and presenter.
“He was very supportive when I started off as a presenter, he couldn’t have been more generous, and I think that was a reflection of him as a man as well.”
In 2002, he faced criticism for wearing a burgundy-coloured tie rather than the customary black when breaking the news of the Queen Mother’s death.
When he was moved to BBC News 24 in 2003, he accused the corporation of ageism. “Ageism is still the BBC’s blind spot. Yet it is blindingly obvious that maturity goes with grey hairs,” he said.
Sissons retired from broadcasting in 2009. Two years later, he published an autobiography in which he criticised the BBC for having what he saw as a left-wing bias.
Paying tribute, Lord Hall said: “Peter Sissons was one of the great television figures of his time – as an interviewer, presenter and world-class journalist. During his distinguished career he was one of the most recognisable and well-respected faces of television news.
“He was always a great person to be with and to work with. He will be missed by his many friends and colleagues and our thoughts are with his family.”
Very sad to hear of death of Peter Sissons, at relatively young age of 77. He was superb TV reporter, & pioneer presenter of ITV News at One, & first in-depth news on C4, brilliant at conducting short studio interviews with people in power. BBC never made best of Peter’s talents
Having grown up watching and admiring Peter Sissons it was such a privilege to end up working alongside him at News 24. I don’t think he ever got my name right when he threw to me but I loved sharing a studio with him and learned so much. My thoughts are with his family.
Returning to his home city, he sat on the Hillsborough Independent Panel, which published a report into the 1989 football stadium disaster in 2012.
The chairman of the panel, the former Bishop of Liverpool, James Jones, said: “Peter made a unique and outstanding contribution to the Hillsborough Independent Panel. His advice made a huge difference to our work. I know he felt both honoured and proud to serve the city.”
A statement from Sissons’ management company said he “died peacefully” in Maidstone Hospital in Kent on Tuesday.
“His wife and three children were with him and wish to pass on their thanks to the hospital staff,” it added. BBC News
