With just three days before their first Vitality Netball World Cup match, Zimbabwe senior national team manager Ledwin Dondo says they need to put all their energy on the upcoming assignment.

Zimbabwe take on Sri Lanka on Friday, in their first encounter in Group A at the M & S Bank Arena (12.25pm Zimbabwe time).

It has been a busy schedule for the team since their arrival in Liverpool with different groups from the Diaspora community wanting to host the team and there has been a lot of excitement from their fans.

But with just a few days before the tournament gets underway, Dondo said the players now need to fully focus on the task at hand as they continued with their training sessions yesterday.

“I think they (the players) are recovering, they will be ready for the matches, I think they are picking up. It’s different from day one, they were too tired and we understood. Now they are recovering, we are a bit relaxed now, so it’s okay. “From today (yesterday) we are not moving away from the hotel until we get to the first match . . . We are not attending any function,” said Dondo.

However, captain Perpetua Siyachitema missed yesterday’s training session after she picked up a shoulder injury on Sunday. And she was still being assessed yesterday.

Dondo said they were concerned about the injury but were still waiting for the doctors’ report.

“We are worried now about Perpetua but the doctors are reassuring us that she will be okay. She pulled herself during training, there was a behind pass during training, so she forced her hand back to get the ball,” Dondo said.

On the friendly matches they had hoped for, the Gems team manager revealed that they have had to forego their plans due to the costs involved and also looking at the time remaining before the competition begins.

“At the moment we don’t have any friendly game. Uganda had asked us to play them and our girls were too tired to play with them, so there are no friendly games here. We are just training until the first match on Friday.

“We discovered that they are far away, we need to check out of the hotel and re-book there, which is very expensive. So we decided to stay here and train.

“The matches were pre-arranged for us, so we thought they were near where we are staying. Now we were told we should move up and book a hotel and pay for the court and the umpires . . . So there is just going to be training sessions until the matches,” said Dondo.

The Gems are hopeful of a positive start when they clash with Sri Lanka, who are making their 10th appearance at the Netball World Cup on Friday. However, the senior national team have made it clear they would want to leave a mark on their maiden appearance. The Herald

Harrison dumps Harare City

Harare City coach Mark Harrison has stepped down from his post in a development which could affect the municipal club’s proposed twinning with English Championship football side Nottingham Forest.

Mark Harrison
Mark Harrison

The former CAPS United gaffer had before the AFCON-enforced Premiership break sensationally threatened to leave the local league, having been frustrated by the way match officials were handling Harare City’s games.

Though it was claimed the coach had been given a compassionate leave in the past few days he has been suspiciously away, it has since been established that Harrison has indeed resigned from his position.

His long-time ally and former assistant at the capital club, Mark Mathe, has taken temporary charge of the team and he picked up a crucial point away against TelOne at Luveve on Sunday in a game his charges played virtually the entire tie a man short after midfielder Moses Muchenje was controversially sent off.

Harare City chief executive Tafadzwa Bhasera confirmed Harrison had tendered his resignation.

“Our head coach, Mark Harrison, has left his post. He has his own reasons and we had to respect that. We would like to thank him for the work he did for the team in the past one-and-a-half years he has been in charge.

“We wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” she said.

But the development could leave the club’s hyped historic pact with Nottingham Forest in tatters.

Harrison has been spearheading the proposed marriage between the two parties.

The English coach, who hails from Derby near the city of Nottingham, had initiated partnership talks early this year and last month, Forest made the first move after inviting juniors’ coaches from Harare City to come for attachment in England.

They had also pledged modern training equipment for the flourishing Harare City Academy.

But with Harrison’s ties with the double Chibuku Super Cup champions having ended, the lucrative twinning deal could suffer a stillbirth.

Bhasera has, however, insisted the partnership will not be affected whatsoever since Harrison and Harare City parted ways by mutual consent.

Already, Mathe is being tipped to take over the reins as he has lived under the shadows of Harrison for the past 18 months.

But the former CAPS United deputy mentor will have to convince the Harare City hierarchy in the coming few weeks if he is to earn a substantive role.

Former coach Mkhuphali Masuku is also seen as potential replacement for Harrison after he was spotted at Luveve on Sunday. The Herald

Jere defends Tutisani, Chitembwe

CAPS United president Farai Jere has come out guns blazing in defence of his deputy and co-shareholder Nhamo Tutisani who has been targeted for abuse by a section of the club’s supporters.

Farai Jere

A group of the club’s supporters caused scenes at Nyamhunga following the 1-0 defeat to ZPC Kariba at the weekend, denouncing the Green Machine vice president in song and dance.

The supporters demanded answers as to why coach Lloyd Chitembwe has been missing on the team’s bench with speculation in the overdrive that he has been involved in a major fallout with Tutisani.

The club yesterday called a Press conference addressed by club president Jere. He was flanked by Tutisani, Chitembwe and his backroom staff. Jere said he was worried his partner Tutisani was being targeted for no apparent reason.

“That is speculation. It’s natural, remember in the past it was Joel Makuvire (who fell in the same predicament) then Cuthbert Chitima.

“Everyone knows that Nhamo Tutisani is responsible for the day-to-day running of the team, so if things are not going on well they speculate that maybe he is the problem or is the cause of the problem. I want to make it very clear that there is nothing like that.

“Honestly, Nhamo Tutisani is not just a director or worker at CAPS United, he is a shareholder and I don’t see any reason or any sense in him trying to divide his team and make it lose when he is putting money into the team. It’s his investment. You cannot invest into something and expect it to fail. It was mere speculation because the coach was not around,” said Jere.

Jere reiterated that Chitembwe, who had been thought to be on his way out, remains the team’s head coach.

He said there were no divisions in the club and explained that the coach missed recent assignments because of illness. Makepekepe have collected a single point in their last four matches and the dip in form, and the absence of Chitembwe, has fuelled speculation.

The 2016 championship winning coach was conspicuous by his absence in Kariba at the weekend. Chitembwe also missed Makepekepe’s last match before the three-week league break when they played a 3-3 draw against TelOne at the National Sports Stadium.

“The coach was not feeling well, I think you are quite aware of this serious flu bug that has been going around. With football you don’t want to mix your players when you have flu because you can affect the entire squad. This guy is quite a seasoned player and coach and he knows about these things. Otherwise we could have gone to Kariba without a team, everyone down with flu.

“So the coach wasn’t feeling well but as you can see he is here with us and he is now okay. He is back at work and you will see him tomorrow at training,” said Jere.

Makepekepe vice president Tutisani confirmed at the media conference that winger Gabriel Nyoni is leaving for Maritzburg United during the window.

“We are excited for the young man. He made the grade, he is now going across to Maritzburg United. We are just about to finalise the finer details.

“At least we have got one export this year and in terms of our objectives and policies we would want to grow football careers of or players. We pray for him and hope that he goes beyond the South African league,” said Tutisani.

Veteran defender Method Mwanjali, whose contract expires next week, has expressed his desire to continue with the Green Machine. The Herald

Born Felistas Murata, Mai Titi, said life would have been more difficult without the support of the people.

She said her friends, especially those in the entertainment sector, have shown her the other side of the world and ways of changing her life.

“I am thankful and grateful to God because it is not easy. Some of us could not have made it and lasted to this day. I am here to celebrate another year added to my life,” the comedian said.

Mai Titi said she was looking forward to venturing into charity work and extend a hand to those in need.

She said she owed it to other women including her erstwhile friend, Madam Boss, who was also celebrating her birthday on the same day.

“I love to be around fellow women who work and are so helpful in society. I love to get to work and help others,” she said.

Mai Titi showered praises on her friend Madam Boss, real name Tyra Chikocho saying she was a source of inspiration.

The two picked up a fight which saw them exchanging a war of words on social media before they found each other again.

“I love to be around fellow women especially those who work. I love to work and learn from them. I am learning a lot from Madam Boss as she is a loving woman with a kind heart. She is into charity and I am learning a lot from her,” she said.

Mai Titi’s birthday celebrations, which were hosted by Spencer “Boss Spencer” Madziya and Wanisayi “Mahwindo” Mutandwa attracted many entertainers that also included Baba Harare and gospel singer Mathias Mhere. The Herald

The policeman (name withheld) could not explain his actions as he was caught on camera doing the act.

Some members of the public, who saw the man in the shop, claimed he had been loitering for a long time while holding the food.

Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he regretted any inconvenience that might have had been caused by one of the members of police force.

The food the police allegedly stole

“The act has tarnished the image of police officers as they are required to teach people to desist from crime and lead by example.

“The matter is being solved and the correct measures will be taken into account.

“We do not condone any illegal acts or crime by members of the public as they will lead into thorough punishment,” said Ass Comm Nyathi. H-Metro

Chicken Slice employees up for $11k theft

Eleven Chicken Slice employees were, last weekend, brought to court answering to theft charges involving over $11 000.

Paidamoyo Bopoto and ten others were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare Magistrate Barbra Mateko.

Allegations are that from January to July this year, at Chicken Slice Bank Street, seven of them were employed as till operators while four others were chefs.

It is alleged that the till operators would receive orders from customers and after the money would have been paid, the two operators would then send the orders to the chefs to prepare meals.

Whilst the customer would be waiting for the meal, the till operator would cancel the transaction using the supervisor’s password and despite the transaction sailing through, the chefs would continue processing the order.

This would net effect Chicken Slice as the entity would be giving the food away for free and the till operator would then collect the money of the earlier-on bought and processed order from the customer.

The matter came to light when Christopher Muchemwa the security officer was viewing the Closed Circuit TV and noticed that the till operators were recording some suspicious transactions separately which was outside their duties.

This resulted in him asking to view the sales sheet and it was discovered that more transactions were recorded as void whereas at the time of the voiding, there was no supervisor and for the void to be valid, the duty supervisor had to cancel it with her password.

An internal audit was conducted and it was discovered that the employees prejudiced Chicken Slice of $11 097 and USD$126, 75. H-Metro

‘He was an abusive man’

A Chinhoyi University of Technology student was grisly murdered by her suspected boyfriend after an altercation on June 30.

The accused is admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals under police guard where he is not able to speak.

Angela was buried on Saturday at Paradise cemetery in Marondera.

The deceased’s father Ido Dapi said a young life had been lost unnecessarily and they were devastated as a family.

“We are waiting for investigations to reveal what actually transpired.”

He added:

“(There is) So much abuse going on in these young relationships; they don’t speak. Angie is gone but let her be the last girl to go through such an ordeal.

“Let this be an example and save the next girl,” Dapi said.

A close friend to the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity said Nenhowe was always abusive.

“I remembered tiri ma 1.1 (First Year, First Semester) she used to complain that he was abusive. He would beat her because of his insecurities.

“At some point she wanted to leave him and she started seeing one of our classmates during vacation and as soon as we opened they broke up that was 1.2 (First Year, Second Semester).

“I tried to ask her but she just gave silly comments but I heard from one of our classmates that they broke up because she was trying to keep him safe,” the classmate said.

The classmate said it was now making sense why Angie wanted to leave the abusive relationship.

“Angie wanted to leave this guy a long time ago but she was trapped; it’s not making any sense. I feel like I failed her. I could have paid more attention and reported him right away but instead we comforted her,” she said.

A close source to the mishap said:

“Angela and her boyfriend broke up a month ago because Nenhowe had cheated on her and he refused to accept being dumped.

“He travelled from a mine in Zvishavane where he worked to Harare on Sunday to try and fix their relationship that’s when they met at Elizabeth Hotel and he then choked her when she entered the hotel.

“Nenhowe then sent a text to his friend stating that he had killed his girlfriend and when the police found out Nenhowe was bleeding profusely after he attempted to kill himself.”

She was buried in Marondera on Saturday. H-Metro

The fire that destroyed part of Prophet Walter Magaya’s Hotel last Thursday could have been caused by an electrical fault as the complex was using power from generator.

This was said by the Harare City Council fire department.

In a statement, Harare City Council said the fire division suspects that the fire that destroyed part of Yadah hotel in Waterfalls started when workers started a generator.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Lovemore Mafukidze confirmed that preliminary investigations point to the generator.

“Information gathered by both attending officers suggests that as there was no electricity in the area and the fire started soon after the occupants had started their generator for lighting purposes of the hotel complex.

“It might have been an electrical fault.

“The Division also noted with great concern that there were no emergency exits in the boarding houses, therefore, the Division recommends that these emergency exits be made available.”

Added the statement:

“The Emergency Services received a call at 17:38 hours, two fire tenders were promptly dispatched to the scene of fire, and a water carrier responded at 17:53 hours together with a command vehicle.”

Council said the team faced no challenges to put down the fire as they were fully equipped and had enough manpower.

“The Division faced no challenges at all since water was readily available and the first attending Officer in charge on mobilising control room informed them that the building was well alight so did the second attending officer in charge.

“A portable pump was set up drawing water from the swimming pool within the hotel to replenish the first attending fire engine.

“Two hose reels, one jet, and four breathing apparatus were used during the firefighting process. Another water carrier arrived at 18:21 hours with additional water,” said Mafukidze.

The Assistant Divisional Officer attended at 6:21pm and directed firefighting operations thereby preventing the spread of fire to other wings.

“The fire was declared under control at 18:43 hours and damping down continued up to 20:01 hours when firefighting was complete,” he added. H-Metro

Warriors to know AFCON foes

0

By Robson Sharuko

The inquest into the Warriors’ doomed 2019 AFCON finals campaign might only be beginning but by next week the country will already know the opposition it will face to try and qualify, for the first time in its history, to three straight editions of this tournament.

zimbabwe warriors afcon 2019The next AFCON finals will be held in Cameroon in 2021.

The Confederation of African Football announced yesterday that the draw for the 2021 Nations Cup will be held here on Thursday next week, the same day the organisation will also be holding its 32nd Ordinary General Assembly meeting.

ZIFA president Felton Kamambo is expected to attend that meeting as he continues his bid to move a gear up in his rise in the corridors of power, on both the domestic and continental front, by landing one of the CAF executive committee posts at the same indaba.

Kamambo was a rank outsider in the ZIFA leadership battle in December last year but powered to a shock victory over incumbent Philip Chiyangwa and now has to beat the challenge of Elvis Chetty of the Seychelles, Andrew Kamanga of Zambia, Adam “Bomber” Mthetwa of Swaziland and Mohamed Sobha of Mauritius for the CAF executive committee post.

That seat is reserved for the COSAFA membership whose organisational profile has been boosted here by Madagascar’s Cinderella tale in reaching the 2019 AFCON quarter-finals, in their debut show at this tournament, and South Africa’s elimination of hosts Egypt.

Zambian football legend Kalusha Bwalya was the occupant of that seat but will not contest the polls set for next Thursday.

Kamambo’s endorsement to fight for the CAF executive committee post can be considered a huge achievement given that, only six months ago, he was a virtual unknown in the corridors of African football as he wandered in the wilderness of the domestic game, having quit his post as a ZIFA board member in March last year, and trying to have his ban from the sport overturned.

“It’s a huge honour to be part of these people who have been shortlisted for this very powerful and important position in the administration of our game,” he told The Herald when the names of the candidates were unveiled.

“Obviously, what this says is that there are a lot of people who are watching what am doing back home and have been impressed by the work I have done in the short space of time I have been the leader of ZIFA.’’

His nomination for the CAF executive committee post has also come at a time when his leadership of ZIFA is being questioned, in some quarters back home, including the Sports Commission, about the way the association organised the country’s participation at this year’s AFCON finals show.

ZIFA have been given up to this Friday to answer certain questions raised by the Sports Commission.

The Warriors, who just like at the 2017 AFCON finals, only picked up a point from their three group matches here, were in Pot 3 during the draw for this tournament, ranked 25th, and were in the company of Libya, Botswana, Niger, Benin, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Sudan, Sierra Leone, the Central African Republic, Burundi and Tanzania.

Zimbabwe was one of just five countries, the others being Burundi, Benin, Guinea Bissau and Tanzania, who made it to this AFCON finals from that Pot 3.

Mozambique, Gabon, Togo, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea and Ethiopia, who were ranked higher in Pot 2, failed to qualify for this tournament.

It’s likely the Warriors, despite their failed 2019 AFCON finals show, will be ranked higher and possibly in Pot 2 at the draw for the 2021 tournament.

The Tanzanians, who marked their return to the continent’s football tournament here after a 41-year absence, have become the latest country to sack their gaffer as the high price of AFCON failure continues to devour coaches across the continent.

Nigerian football legend Emmanuel Amunike is the latest to fall by the wayside — just four months after being hailed as a hero for ending Tanzania’s lengthy wait for a return to the finals.

The Taifa Stars lost all their group matches here, including a painful 2-3 defeat to bitter rivals Kenya, and Amuneke was fingered as the fall guy for their lifeless return to the big time in which they were also beaten by Senegal and Algeria. The events in Dar es Salaam continue a trend that has seen coaches, whose teams didn’t perform to expectations at this Nations Cup finals, being sacrificed with the Egyptians firing their Mexican gaffer, Javier Aguirre, just two hours after their defeat by South Africa.

The entire Egyptian Football Association also collapsed, after the resignation of its president and board members, while Uganda parted ways with their French coach, Sebastien Desabre, who has quickly moved to join ambitious Egyptian side Pyramids and was unveiled yesterday. The Herald

Chinyoka on Tuesday: In Zimbabwe we reward deals, not enterprise

Tinomudaishe Chinyoka

By Tinomudaishe Chinyoka

At the height of the global financial crisis, executives from the “Big Three” American automakers, General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co, and Chrysler LLC travelled to Washington DC to beg for $25 billion in federal bailouts from the administration to help pay their suppliers, workers other costs

Tinomudaishe Chinyoka
Tinomudaishe Chinyoka

But, to get to DC, the CEOs flew, each in their own private jet. They could have flown first class or even shared one plane, lawmakers argued. Could they consider selling their planes and fly back first class, they were asked. Not one volunteered.

Of course, these are people that ran what were otherwise huge companies, with revenues in the tens or hundreds of billions of dollars. Their personal salaries alone were in the region of US$25m a year, each. So, flying by jet to an important meeting must have seemed like a no-brainer.

To their credit, the American public and their lawmakers were shocked at this blatantly tone-deaf approach to begging. It spoke of how out of touch these rich people were. We have had our own share of people with tone deaf approaches to personal salaries of course. Right here in Zimbabwe.

We had Cuthbert-something who earned hundreds of thousands of United States dollars from PSMAS at a time when the society was cutting cover and failing to pay suppliers. We had those obscene Harare City Council salaries, when the municipality was/is failing to provide a single service.

We have had boards that slept of the job (honestly, how does one fail to see that a whole lake is running out of water until it’s too late, then lie that there are no load-shedding schedules in place only to introduce load shedding the very day it published expensive full colour denials in the media?!) but did not lose their benefits.

We had Simba Chikore earning those salaries from Air Zimbabwe while siphoning assets from the national airline to the one that he and his wife owned, only we are told now that we were also paying Boeing US$1m to teach him to fly the planes but that he never got round to learning anything because he probably had no time.

We are the country that has allowed NSSA to lose billions of dollars without sending a single person to remand prison to answer for it at least: you know, the one where they just taste prison for two to three days before their lawyers get them out.

We are the country where people will lynch you for suggesting that a ‘prophet’ earning US1m a month in order to sleep with 17 year old girls in his church is wrong. Where a whole country conveniently forgets that there were stories that the same prophet stole more than US$105m for stands that never materialized.

We have lost the ability to be shocked by the shocking. A civil servant must not be able to build a multimillion dollar house when their lifetime salary will never get to half the cost of their house, but they do.

Executives in NSSA, ZINARA, ZIMRA, Air Zimbabwe etc live like they were Jeff Bezos and we are fine with this. Hell, some of us even aspire to get there. Politicians who have never held a private sector job own houses in Gunhill etc and we dare anyone to question it. You are just envious, is the most polite thing you will hear.

Except that for one to be envious, there needs to be something virtuous about that which is envied. Criticizing theft, chicanery or ill gotten wealth is not envy, but is perhaps the only way to provide public oversight in a country where anti-corruption bodies have failed us.

When civil servants can afford to send their children to Arundel or Falcon College, when their gazetted salaries suggest they can’t afford it, citizens must worry about the effect of ‘deals’.

When a father flies to a parents’ day event at an expensive private school in a helicopter, when a businessman is photographed holding loads of Gucci bags or sitting behind cash a-la-Floyd Mayweather, when a politician buys a Lamborghini in this time of austerity as we are told, it’s not envy that makes people stop and say: wait a minute, what?

Rather, it is the obvious surprise that someone that’s not known for inventing anything, someone that doesn’t even employ many or any people, someone that’s not started an Econet/Facebook type business can flaunt wealth like they are richer than Strive Masiyiwa or Mark Zuckerberg.

It is because the obvious impression created by their not being known for starting a business commensurate with their ostentatiousness is that they did ‘deals’. Sadly, in this country, there aren’t many known honest ‘deals’.

Besides Econet, Zimbabweans have not invented or set up anything as would justify some lifestyles we see in our country. The inevitable suspicion that’s created is that whoever manages to, must have done ‘deals’ and ‘made a killing’. The trouble is, whatever gets killed in these deals is likely something that would have benefited the whole country. And when it is diverted to the connected few, it leaves nothing for the common man.

In a country in which some people earn RTGS92,00 a month as their pension, the idea that someone who has never invented anything but just flown a helicopter for one family can buy a R32m house in Cape Town or that a boy with no job but a civil servant father can buy a Rolls Royce, is obscene. At some point, we must be ashamed enough to call these things what they really are: fruits of corruption.

Of course, it could very well be that some people did make legitimate money from all those diamonds before …..whatever did happen to our diamonds? Why aren’t we selling them again?

Perhaps, someone needs to fly a helicopter to somewhere and find out?
