On fire Ishmael Wadi in contention for ‘Golden Boot’ in South Africa’s MFC

Warriors forward Ishmael Wadi is in contention to win the “Golden Boot” in the Motsepe Foundation Championship in South Africa after netting his 10th goal for JDR Stars last weekend.

Wadi was on target when his JDR Stars suffered a 1-3 defeat to Uthongathi at home during an encounter that was played on Saturday.

It was the speedy winger’s 10th goal of the campaign, placing him third on the goal scorers chart, four behind leading top scorer Ashely Cupido.

Cupido of Cape Town Spurs who is on the radar of DStv Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs and their rivals Orlando Pirates has scored 14 goals.

Wadi who is yet to score from the spot kick this season is tied with Casric Stars’ player Kgomotso Mosadi who is second on the chart with 10 goals.

Meanwhile, Wadi who found the back of the net nine times last season has reached his first double figures since joining the Hammer Boys in July 2021.

The 28-year-old ex-CAPS United and FC Platinum forward was the league’s second highest top goal scorer last season after losing the gong to Malawian international Khuda Myaba.

However, with eight games left to end the 2022/23 season, Wadi is hoping to surpass in form Cupido to finish as the leagues’ top goal scorer.

“I’m hoping to scoop the golden boot award this season after missing it in the previous campaign. But with eight games to go l want to focus much on helping my team finish top of the log or in a play off position,” said Wadi.

He also added he needs to work extra hard to achieve his target, considering he is netting from open play.

“It’s not easy though to win the golden boot especially when you are scoring from open play, but I have already told myself that its possible,” added Wadi.

Wadi was part of the Warriors’ AFCON tournament’s squad played from January to February 2022 in Cameroon.

He scored a header when Zimbabwe shockingly lost to neighbours Malawi.
