BULAWAYO – Social media kings Bulawayo Chiefs are on course for a swift return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), thanks to an impressive start to their 2025 Southern Region Soccer League (SRSL) campaign.
Chiefs remain unbeaten six games into the season.
On Sunday, Amakhosi Amahle made a bold statement of intent, thumping NUST 6-0 to underline their promotion ambitions.
Veteran midfielder Kelvin Madzongwe opened the scoring in the 19th minute, before captain Malvin Mkolo doubled the lead just before the half hour mark.
Jimu Gwara then took center stage, netting his first goal of the afternoon and Chiefs’ third.
He added a second at the stroke of halftime, sending Chiefs into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Gwara completed his hat trick in the 62nd minute, making it 5-0, before Jameson Masaza wrapped up the game in the 81st.
Chiefs new coach Bekithemba Ndlovu was delighted with the dominant performance but lamented his side’s lack of clinical finishing.
“I was impressed by the boys. However, they created too many chances. If we were more clinical in front of goal, we should have scored more than six,” said Ndlovu who recently got elevated to head coach position from assistant.
It was Ndlovu’s first match in charge of Chiefs amid unconfirmed reports that head coach Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe has left the club.
Unconfirmed reports suggest Takaendesa Jongwe is set to return to his ex-club, Yadah, although last week Chiefs’ newly appointed CEO, Thulani ‘Javas’ Sibanda, stated that the former ZIFA technical director was absent due to family matters.
In a statement addressed to Chiefs’ fans, Sibanda wrote: “On a more personal note, I would like to inform you that our head coach, Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe, is currently attending to a family matter as his wife is not feeling well.
“We ask for your understanding and support during this time as he takes leave to be with his loved ones.”
Chiefs are currently leading the log table with 15 points, five clear Hwange who are sitting on second position.
