HARARE – Zimdancehall titan Winky D launched a lyrical barrage aimed at controversial tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo, declaring in a live performed verse that he would not be bought by a car and would never sell out like other local celebrities who have received vehicles.
Chivayo spent most of 2024 on a spending spree, giving out cars to individuals that range from musicians and football stars to civil servants and radio personalities.
Winky D, who has in the past been at odds with Zanu PF, showed that his views had not been moderated by perceived hostilities from the ruling party during a Saturday gig in Mbare, Harare.
The event, which marked the chanter’s first return to Mbare in seven years, was sponsored by a cigarette maker Swan Valley Group.
“Vanoti nemuzita rababa, apa ndofuti vaba, vhura meso hona ka, handitengeke nemota car (They preach the word of God but they are the ones stealing, open your eyes I cannot be bought by a car),” the star sang to widespread cheers.
Winky D also seemed to take a clever dig at Zimbabwean football legend, Peter Ndlovu, who was also a recipient of a Chivayo gift last year.
“Ndakachibata kuti dzvii but handisi keeper ini handitengese handisi Peter ini, ndorwiswa handinete ndichasvika ini, ndendiri zii handina noise handisi speaker ini (I’m holding it firm but I’m not a keeper, I’m not a sellout like Peter, they fight me, but I won’t give up.
“I will get there, I’m not a speaker I don’t make noise, I am cool),” he chanted.
Winky D also addressed the contentious issue of the cancellation of his gig at the Harare International Conference Centre, saying he would not change his views because of setbacks.
Winky D failed to host his annual Crossover gig, held on 31 December every year, with reports that the prestigious venue had been taken by businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who reportedly paid $245 000 for a Seventh Day Adventist Church event.
“Ndabva paJabhuna (HICC) horaiti chiitai, musandipe tuma notes handina teacher ini, ndapfuura 40 handidi teacher ini, ndosasa nezvandada handina firita
(I left HICC it’s fine do your own, don’t give me notes I don’t have a teacher, I passed 40 I don’t want a teacher, I say what I like I don’t filter),” he sang.
