ZINASU Media Release 30/7/9

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) is disappointed by ZANU PF’s lack of sincerity in their failure not to acknowledge and recognize the contribution made by the late veteran politician and businessman Honorable Dr Patrick Kombayi.

Dr Kombayi was buried in Gweru on Saturday the 27th of July 2009, after he succumbed from gunshot wounds sustained in the 4 March 1990 foiled assassination attempt by the late Simon Muzenda’s bodyguards Kizito Chivamba and Elias Kanengoni.

The late Kombayi played a pivotal during the liberation struggle when he housed, clothed, financed and fed leaders of the revolutionary movements ZIPRA and ZANLA IN Zambia. Robert Mugabe, Hebert Chitepo, Rugare Gumbo, and many other comrades in the liberation struggle all benefited from Kombayi’s courtesy during their stay in Zambia.

We are gravely disappointed and shocked that Comrade Kombayi was not declared a national hero despite his unwavering contribution and selfless sacrifice during and post the liberation struggle. We further challenge the criteria being used to confer hero’s status. People like Border Gezi and Chenjerai Hunzvi were undeservedly buried at the Heroes acre but no roots and a clear history of the liberation struggle.

We wish to remind the nation that the murderers involved in the attempted assassination of our hero, Cde Kombayi in 1991 are still walking free, shame on you Kizito Chivamba justice will prevail very soon. To date there are various politicians who died in unclear circumstances and we demand that an independent commission of inquiry be established to  look into the death of Herbert Chitepo, Josiah Tongogara,Moven Mahachi,Rashiwe Guzha, Susan Tsvangirai, Lookout Masuku to mention just but a few.

We extend our condolences to the Kombayi family, the Movement for Democratic Change and the rest of the nation on the untimely loss of this great fighter. Dr Kombayi relationship with the students union dates back to
2001. In 2001   he assisted several student leaders who had been expelled at
The Midlands State University (MSU).The union continued to get assistance and support from him up until the time of his death.

Go well great politician, go well great businessman, and go well great revolutionary, Five Star politician!  Rest in Eternal Peace.

Blessing Vava, National Spokesperson
