DURBAN – South African gqom star Babes Wodumo has apologised after she recently got visibly intoxicated at a friend’s funeral, leading to public outcry over what some said was her disruptive behaviour.
Wodumo, who was captured on video singing the gospel song, Udumo Lungolwakho while she wiped away tears from her face.
While some sympathised with the gqom star, who was mourning her friend, Pearl Mkhize during her funeral at Esikhaleni, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, on Saturday, 13 September, otherwise pointed out how woefully out of tune the gqom star was.
Apologising to the public for her behaviour, the 31-year-old confirmed that she was highly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
“I would like to apologise about what happened, it was because of booze and now I’m scared of booze. I did many regrettable things during that time, and became a laughing stock because of booze. I’m feeling ashamed about what happened. I’m sorry,” she said.
The latest incident comes as Babes, the wife of late Big Nuz frontman Mampintsha, is currently attending the assault case in the Durban Magistrates Court.
She is facing the case of assault after she allegedly assaulted Durban designer Philile “Philly” Mhlongo of SK Designs on 12 March 2024. She is back in court for her trial on 25 September.
