Former CAF vice president and Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has been handed a lifetime ban by FIFA following his involvement in various offences, including bribery and corruption.

The world football governing body had been investigating the Ghanaian chief after he was filmed in a hotel room by an undercover investigative journalist taking a $65 000 bribe from a supposed businessman seeking to sponsor the Ghanaian football league.

Nyantakyi, who has also previously sat on FIFA’s General Council, denied any wrongdoing, insisting the footage had been doctored, but resigned from his post as Ghana Football Association president in June.

Following their investigations, the adjudicatory chamber of FIFA’s ethics committee released a statement on Tuesday, revealing the punishment handed down on the football administrator.

“The adjudicatory chamber found Mr Nyantakyi guilty of having violated art. 19 (Conflicts of interest), art. 21 (Bribery and corruption) and art. 22 (Commission) of the Fifa Code of Ethics,” FIFA said in the statement.

“As a consequence, Mr Nyantakyi is banned for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level. Additionally, a fine in the amount of CHF 500 000 has been imposed on Mr Nyantakyi.” — AFP.

Illegal settlers headache for Kwekwe city fathers

Kwekwe City Council has raised the red flag over the continued proliferation of illegal settlers in some parts of the city.

Artisanal gold miners from places like Silobela and Zhombe that were flocking to Kwekwe in search of the yellow metal were erecting illegal structures around the city.

An illegal compound of mud huts was erected at the Gokwe turn-off although there was no the access to clean water and ablution facilities.

Acting Kwekwe Town Clerk Mrs Lucia Mnkandla said the local authority was concerned over the lack of critical services at the illegal compound.

“We are really concerned about that illegal compound. There is virtually no service delivery in terms of water and sewer services yet there is quite a significant population there, which poses a health hazard,” she said.

She said council was concerned that the illegal settlers would end up vandalising water mains to gain access to water.

“We also risk having our water contaminated posing a health hazard to the generality of our citizens. They also do not have ablution facilities which is a major health hazard,” said Mrs Mnkandla.

She said council was contemplating relocating the settlers to other parts of the city where there was access to essential services.

“They are within Kwekwe City local authority and, as such, we have to take action. It’s either the area is replanned or they are relocated to another place, but the bottom line is they need access to basic service delivery,” said Mrs Mnkandla.

She said council has also resolved to avail residential stands for the settlers, the bulk of them artisanal miners. The Herald

Ten lawyers will today battle it out in public interviews to select the country’s new substantive Prosecutor-General in Harare.

Tinomudaishe Chinyoka

The interviews, to be conducted by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), recommend the best performer to replace Advocate Ray Goba, who stepped down while awaiting a disciplinary tribunal.

JSC initially published 11 nominees, but Mr Tavengwa Hara’s name did not appear on the interview programme posted at the venue.

Sources said he has since withdrawn from the race.

The candidates on the interview programme are: Mrs Noria Mashumba, Mrs Florence Ziyambi, Ms Jessie Majome, Mrs Wendy Chingeya, Justice Maphios Cheda, Mr Kumbirai Hodzi, Mr Misheck Hogwe, Mr Tinomudaishe Chinyoka, Mr Edmund Marondedza and Mr Tichaona Mantsebo.

JSC acting secretary, Mr Walter Chikwana said all was now set for the interviews.

“We are now ready for the interviews. They start tomorrow (today) at 9am at Rainbow Towers Hotel and ends until all the candidates get a chance to respond to the interview questions.

“As usual a panel comprising JSC commissioners will put questions to the candidates while members of the public with an interest in the interviews listening.

“Everything will be done in terms of the Constitution and in the spirit of fairness and transparency,” said Mr Chikwana.

JSC advertised the post in the Press following the resignation of Adv Goba in September this year.

The office of the PG has become a hot seat, with two previous Prosecutors-General fired for misconduct.

Adv Goba, who chose to resign pending an investigation into his conduct, becomes the third PG to leave office in recent times.

The first to be removed from office was former Attorney-General Mr Sobusa Gula-Ndebele in May 2008, who doubled as head of criminal prosecution and civil litigation.

He was fired for conducting himself in a manner inconsistent with public office.

The dismissal followed recommendations by a tribunal which investigated him.

Mr Gula-Ndebele was succeeded by Mr Johannes Tomana, who was also removed from office last year after a tribunal found him to be grossly incompetent in the execution of his duties.

Mr Kumbirai Hodzi is acting PG with effect from July 24 this year.

He was appointed when Adv Goba was suspended from office on a raft of misconduct allegations.

Adv Goba was suspended on allegations of failing to prosecute high-profile cases, travelling without Cabinet authority and use of abusive language, among other charges.

Mr Hodzi had been Deputy Attorney-General in charge of the Legal Advice Section since 2012. The Herald

Interim Ngezi coach Kadurira remains defiant

Interim Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Clifton Kadurira has remained a defiant man, insisting his side might stage a dramatic comeback and overhaul their nine-point deficit behind leaders FC Platinum and snatch the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship.

Former Ngezi Platinum FC coach Tonderai Ndiraya seen here with Clifton Kadurira, the man who is in interim charge of the team.

FC Platinum just need a point from their remaining games to secure a second successive title.

But Kadurira has his own ideas, dreams and theories.

Yet Kadurira knows FC Platinum could be crowned champions on Sunday even if his Ngezi win their home match against Bulawayo City and the leaders are held by already relegated Shabanie Mine.

Despite being nine points behind, Ngezi have all the pressure as their destiny is no longer in their hands.

Kadurira is now praying hard for FC Platinum to lose all their remaining matches while they win theirs by bigger margins to win their maiden title.

But something must have gone terribly wrong somewhere along the way for a team which had a flying start to the season, under the guidance of Tonderai Ndiraya for them to fire their coach with five games to go and find themselves in the desperate situation they are in.

Ngezi have recorded 19 wins out of 31 matches while FC Platinum have won 22 times out of the same number of games.

Both sides have drawn five times each with Ngezi’s home record better than that of the leaders.

FC Platinum have lost five points at home having lost once to ZPC Kariba and drawing twice while Ngezi failed to pick a full set of points on two occasions, losing once to the leaders and drawing against Chapungu.

A closer analysis of the two title chasers shows that Ngezi’s poor away record was their biggest undoing and if as largely expected FC Platinum seal the championship, Kadurira and his men will reflect and curse their failure rate on the road.

Out of the seven losses Ngezi have suffered this season, six of them were on the road to Bulawayo Chiefs, Yadah, Black Rhinos, Herentals and the relegated pair of Bulawayo City and Mutare City.

Now Kadurira is hoping FC Platinum also lose to relegated Shabanie on Super Sunday before his team clash against Norman Mapeza’s men in the penultimate fixture at Mandava.

Kadurira’s hopes have been raised by Shabanie coach Alexio Sigion who was putting on a brace face yesterday and threatening to derail the FC Platinum party.

Sigion said his team’s fate in the top-flight might have been sealed a fortnight ago but they will not hand rivals FC Platinum the points on a silver platter in the famous Zvishavane derby at Maglas.

FC Platinum could be crowned champions for the second time in a row if they avoid defeat against their cross town foes even if distant title hopefuls Ngezi Platinum record a victory over Bulawayo Chiefs at Baobab on the same afternoon.

Sigion called for professionalism amongst his players whom he urged to showcase their talent in the grand match.

“Of course we have since been relegated though I feel we gave a good fight in our failed bid to survive. But, we remain professional and we hold firmly to the tenets of fair play as is the essence of football. The Herald

Suspected wife killer on the run

By Victor Maphosa

Police in Mashonaland East Province are investigating a murder case in which a 26-year-old man reportedly assaulted his wife (23) to death during a misunderstanding.

Simbarashe Zishiri and the now deceased Trish Machova were employed as farm workers at Uitzicht Farm in Chivhu just over a month ago.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident in a statement.

“It is reported that on October 19 in the afternoon, Simbarashe, who was in the company of his now deceased wife, Trish, and the farm owner’s 15-year-old niece went to water the garden using water from a nearby stream,” he said.

“While at the stream, a cow came to drink water and the 15-year-old niece threw a stone to chase it away while Simbarashe’s wife watched.”

It is alleged that Simbarashe felt that his wife was supposed to be the one to chase the cow away since she was older than the farm owner’s 15-year-old niece.

Reports are that Simbarashe confronted his wife, asking her why she did not chase the cow away.

He dragged her to a nearby bush and assaulted her.

“Some moments later, Simbarashe called the girl to come where he was, but the girl rushed home and informed the farm owner and together they rushed to the scene and they found Trish lying on the ground with a swollen cheek, while struggling to breathe,” Insp Mwanza said.

He said Simbarashe and the farm owner ferried Trish to the Harare-Masvingo Highway in an ox-drawn cart and they hired a vehicle to take her to Chivhu General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Upon realising that his wife was dead, Simbarashe is believed to have sneaked out of the female ward and vanished.

On October 20, the farm owner reported the matter to the police and they launched a manhunt for Simbarashe.

Meanwhile, police in Marondera are investigating a case where an unknown person allegedly terminated her pregnancy.

“Some children were playing near Cold Storage Commission premises in Marondera and discovered a foetus in a ditch covered with a blanket,” he said. The Herald

Preparations for the interdenominational choral group Zimpraise International Gospel’s annual festival are at an advanced stage with organisers releasing the full programme and list of performers.

The event, which will be held on Saturday in the Harare Gardens, will be free of charge and will run under the theme “One God, One Love” to promote love, peace and harmony.

The concert will see some of the local gospel greats who include Mathias Mhere and Janet Manyowa supporting Zimpraise choir.

In an interview with The Herald, Zimpraise boss Joseph Madziyire said preparations were at advanced stage for the show.

“We are so happy that rehearsals are underway and we have some local acts who will be supporting us. They have been with us at most of our shows. We have decided to do the event for free.

“Since we started this concept it was our idea to make them free of charge but financial constraints were limiting us.

“We are proud that in the past years we have never missed an edition. This year it is all about the people, giving back to the community,” he said.

Madziyire said they chose the theme with the aim of encouraging unity.

“We should not fight and suffer at the same time. We are one family of God. We dedicate the event to the people of Zimbabwe. Apart from music and dance, the event will also have braai and I urge everyone to come and worship the Lord through music and dance,” he said.

Just like their norm, Madziyire said they will also take the opportunity to record the live DVD at the event, which will be released weeks later.

He said he was also confident that the show will go well because he got support in terms of partnership with life assurance company First Mutual Life and CAPS Pharmaceuticals to fulfil his dream.

Last year’s edition of the festival saw United States influential preacher and senior pastor of the Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, Thomas Dexter Jakes — popularly known as TD Jakes — alongside Bishop John Francis United Kingdom attending. The Herald

A Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) worker has been fined $600 for illegally connecting electricity to 11 households in Chitungwiza while pretending to be on official duty.

Notion Charakupa (49), who is employed as a revenue assurance assistant, pleaded not guilty to abuse of office charges, but was convicted after a full trial by Chitungwiza resident magistrate Mrs Yeukai Chigodora.

Charakupa was ordered to pay the fine or risk spending six months in prison.

His two accomplices Maxwell Chadambura and Alfred Zakaria, who were responsible for connecting electricity to the 11 homes will be sentenced tomorrow.

Prosecutor Mr Norman Koropi proved that from January to April this year, Charakupa together with Chadambura and Zakaria bought electrical cables, a ladder, electricity meters and boxes and proceeded to Garikai houses in Unit L, Seke, where they illegally connected electricity to 11 houses.

Mr Koropi said the three lied that they were ZETDC employees and were on official duty since they were all wearing the company’s overalls and using the company’s vehicle, which was being driven by Charakupa.

The matter came to light when another ZETDC worker Shepherd Marunga received an anonymous tip off that the trio was connecting electricity to houses using the old fixed system instead of the prepaid system leading to their arrest.

The illegal connection prejudiced ZETDC of a lot of revenue as the connections bypassed the charging meters. The Herald

TelOne decries vandalism, thefts

TelOne has voiced concern over increased network vandalism and copper cable thefts countrywide. This was revealed during the Mutasa North Constituency road map strategy stakeholders meeting in Honde Valley recently.

TelOne
TelOne

TelOne Manicaland area manager Mr John Chipurura said there was an increase in thefts and vandalism of the firm’s infrastructure, mostly in Sakubva and Dangamvura.

In an interview with The Herald, Mr Chipurura attributed the rise in copper cable thefts to the high value of copper, which the market is offering.

He said Mutasa North Constituency Member of Parliament Cde Chido Madiwa would this week receive TelOne internet connection in her office to ease communication problems.

In a statement, corporate communications and client experience head Ms Melody Harry said TelOne had been a victim of vandalism.

She said security alarms had been installed on the copper infrastructure in order to trigger alarms.

“I can confirm that TelOne has been a victim of increased network vandalism and copper cable thefts,” said Ms Harry. Since January, at least 33 cases have been recorded affecting hundreds of clients.

However, in response, TelOne has stepped up its efforts to curb these thefts and network vandalism by installing security alarms on the copper cable infrastructure, which silently trigger the alarm in the event that someone tampers with the copper cables.

This has resulted in arrests, with at least 60 criminals having been arrested.

Ms Harry said TelOne had also partnered with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to step up patrols at the country’s borders to control smuggling of copper stolen from the TelOne network.

She sympathised with clients who lost their TelOne copper cables stating that these acts of vandalism had affected TelOne and its clients in a negative way in terms of service delivery.

“The biggest loss from vandalism is the impact on the TelOne reputation and the experiences of our clients as this may mean prolonged periods of disservice for the clients,” she said.

“Through such downtime, our clients also tend to lose business as both voice and broadband are affected.”

On top of that, TelOne has increased physical security patrols in high risk areas.

The company is also conducting massive anti-vandalism campaigns during which they are engaging communities, educating them on the ills of the thefts scourge and the consequences coming either directly or indirectly.

“Through the campaigns, we appeal to the public to report any suspicious activities relating to telecommunications equipment thefts or trade while offering exciting rewards for valuable information that leads to arrests of any such thieves,” said Ms Harry. The Herald

Guards injured in machete attack

Security guards at Eldorado Mine sustained serious injuries following an attack by machete-wielding artisanal miners who were trying to force their way into the mine.

The guards fired a warning shot before they were disarmed by the miners who attacked them with machetes and knives.

More than 40 armed men descended on the mine in the early hours of Sunday morning demanding to be allowed entry into the mine, which was closed recently following the collapse of a shaft that led to the death of about 14 people.

Mashonaland West acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera said the armed men attacked four security guards who were guarding the mine’s head gear.

“Four security guards were on duty guarding the head gear when a mob of about 40 men attacked them while threatening to kill them if they denied them entry into the mineshaft,’’ he said.

“Taking advantage of the defenceless security guards some of the robbers entered the mine while others remained outside. The group later exited the mine and smashed the window of a Toyota Hilux, which was parked in the garage.”

They stole car parts and disappeared from the scene leaving the injured security guards helpless.

The injured were later taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for treatment by well-wishers.

Insp Kohwera appealed to the community to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the accused persons before calling on owners of Eldorado Mine to tighten security to avoid illegal entrance into the mineshaft.

At least 14 illegal gold miners were trapped at Eldorado Mine after a mineshaft collapsed before it was sealed off but reports indicate that artisanal miners were still continuing with mining activities. The Herald
