The ASB Hospitality (Zimbabwe) run Meikles Group has said its financial stability remains strong with cash and bank balances amounting to more than US$19 million at the end of December 2022.

In its trading update for the third quarter ended 31 December 2022, the company said it is optimistic about its prospects despite the evolving challenges in the operating environment.

The Group said the trading environment for the quarter under review was characterised by tighter financial conditions due to the policy measures implemented by the Government to stabilise prices and the exchange rate from July 2022.

“The policy measures had a positive impact on both inflation and the exchange rate.

“Electricity supply challenges worsened during the quarter under review leading to increased use of generators and in some instances reduction in operating hours,” read the update signed by the company secretary Thabani Mpofu dated February 14.

It was also noted that sales volumes for the supermarkets segment decreased by 16.49% for the quarter but were resilient to the challenges in the operating environment and grew by 2.50% for the nine months period ended 31 December 2022.

Read the update: “Room occupancy for the hospitality segment grew by 9.85 and 18.43 percentage points for the quarter and nine months respectively. Revenue per available room increased by 94% and 210% in US$ terms for the quarter and nine months respectively.

“Group revenue grew by 40% and 58% in inflation adjusted terms for the quarter and the nine months respectively. In historical cost terms, Group revenue grew by 399% and 411% for the quarter and the nine months respectively.

“All operating subsidiaries generated positive cash flows during the period under review.

“The supermarkets segment completed and opened two new stores, Pick n Pay Simon Mazorodze and Pick n Pay Madokero during the quarter under review. Branch network expansion and refurbishments are funded from operating cash flows.”

With no bank borrowings, the Group said its financial stability was strong with cash and bank balances amounting to more than US$19 million.

“The Group is optimistic about its prospects despite the evolving challenges in the operating environment. The Group’s financial stability remains strong with cash and bank balances amounting to more than US$19 million at the end of December 2022.

“The Group has no bank borrowings. Both expansion and replacement capital expenditure plans continue to be implemented as the Group has adequate financial resources at its disposal,” read the update.

ASB Hospitality are the owners of Meikles Hotel (Zimbabwe) after purchasing it for US$20 million in March 2020.

The move emanated from the Meikles Hotel directors’ conclusion that the hotel had no capacity to mobilise the US$30 million required for the refurbishment to turn it into a five-star property.

Former Dynamos and Zimbabwe Warriors gaffer Kalisto Pasuwa has scooped the coach of the year award in Malawi for the 2022 season.

The award comes after the 52-year-old tactician guided Malawian giants Nyasa Big Bullets to a treble last season.

He propelled the Blanytre based side to a pre-season Charity Shield in March at the start of the season and went on to win Malawian FA Cup in October before completing the treble mid November after winning the championship title.

Last season’s title was Pasuwa’s fourth on the trot since joining Bullets in 2018.

The Great Khali as Pasuwa is nicknamed extended his stay at Bullets in May after putting pen to paper on a new three year deal set to expire in 2025.

“Nyasa Big Bullets FC is delighted to announce that Kalisto Pasuwa has signed a new contract to extend his commitment with the club,” Big Bullets confirmed Pasuwa’s stay in a statement.

“The head coach has signed a three-year deal to remain at the helm of The People’s Team until 2025.”

Reacting to the contract extension with the four time champions said Pasuwa:

“I’m very happy to have extended my contract with Nyasa Big Bullets. It has been very exciting to work with a team like Bullets.

“As you know we have a new project that we are working on. I want to see young boys coming in to play senior football with maturity.

“So with the extension of my contract I hope everything will go well along with the technical team that I’m having, we are hoping for the best this year (2022).”

Former Zimbabwe international Khama Billiat whose career at Kaizer Chiefs remains uncertain and could come to an end, is now being linked with a reunion with his former coach Pitso Mosimane in Saudi Arabia.

This comes after multiple reports from South Africa suggest that the attacker is linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli who are coached by Mosimane.

According to South African publication Sunday World “Billiat’s days at Kaizer Chiefs are numbered and his services have been offered to Pitso Mosimane’s club Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.”

A source that spoke to the publication said: “His [Billiat] contract will definitely not be renewed at Chiefs”.

Billiat who was recently ruled out for the remainder of the 2022/23 season with a torn groin muscle injury is left with four months on his contract with Amakhosi.

His contract expires in June but the club is yet to negotiate for a new deal with the 32-year-old forward and this has worsened his situation.

A move to Saudi Arabia to reunite with Mosimane who signed him from Ajax Cape Town in 2013, worked together for seasons and won various silverwares including the CAF Champions League in 2016 could help Billiat revive his career.

Pregnant women sleep on the floor at UBH, asked to bring own blankets

Pregnant women are sleeping on the floor and being asked to bring their own blankets at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) in a further sign of the deteriorating health delivery system in Zimbabwe.

This was revealed on Tuesday as a matter of national interest in Parliament by MDC Alliance MP Illos Nyoni.

He further cited a shortage of blood at the hospital and urged the Ministry of Health to consider recapitalisation of the institution.

“Thank you Mr. Speaker Sir. My point of national interest is on the state of the maternity wings of most hospitals in Zimbabwe. I will zero in on the United Bulawayo Hospitals UBH. I have had the opportunity to visit that part of the hospital and the state it is in is very sad.

“The infrastructure has dilapidated; the floors have potholes; in a hospital. The buildings are crowded; you will find expecting women being asked to sleep on the floor because the beds will be full. They end up being asked to bring their own blankets from home,” he said.

“We are also aware that during the process of labour, a lot of blood is lost and most of the time the blood is not there. If the doctors prescribe two pints of blood, what will be available is what is given and in most cases, they will end up getting less than half of the blood that will be needed.

“It is my prayer therefore that the Ministry of Health looks at this issue with seriousness to ensure that there is improvement in this area. Perhaps also consider utilisation of Ekusileni Medical Centre, which is currently under-utilised, although it is said to be open. I thank you,” he said.

Three weeks ago, Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Constantino Chiwenga launched the Health Resilience Fund (HRF), the National Health Strategy (2021-2025), the Investment case for the National Health Strategy and the Coordination framework for the health sector.

The HRF, which succeeded the Health Development Fund (2016-2022), is a pooled health fund with financial commitments of about US$90 million over the next 3 years.

It is being rolled out with financing from the European Union, the Governments of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO are the technical partners of the Fund which is expected to contribute to the improvement of health care for vulnerable mothers, newborns, children and adolescents in Zimbabwe.

With the country facing financial and economic crisis coupled with mismanagement and corruption, the health sector suffers more and it now relies mainly on donor funding.

Doves Funeral Assurance loses its US$4 million lawsuit against Zimplats

Doves Funeral Assurance has lost a US$$4 195 543 lawsuit against Zimplats after High Court judge, Justice Amy Tsanga ruled that there was a non-existent contract between the two companies.

The dispute between Doves and the platinum mining giant started after Zimplats cancelled the tender it had awarded Doves to provide funeral cover for its more than 2 000 workers in early 2013.

Doves then approached the High Court accusing Zimplats of breaching the contract. The funeral insurance organization demanded US$$4 195 543 in damages.

In its application, Doves, represented by Advocate Sylvester Hashiti, pointed out that an agreement existed between the insurance company and Zimplats for the establishment of the Zimplats Employee Funeral Scheme.

Representing Zimplats, Addington Chinake, submitted that there was no existing contract between Doves and his client that could be used for the court to rule in favour of the insurance company.

Justice Tsanga ruled in favour of Zimplats stating that there was no signed contract between the two companies.

“It would be tantamount to dragging an unwilling partner to the altar or worse still, condoning the operation of business gangster style, through arm-twisting, were a party to insist on specific performance for a contract that was never perfected or claim damages where the tender documents specifically provided to the contrary,” read part of the ruling by Justice Tsanga.

“More significantly, where the very award of the tender had been gotten through non-disclosure of key information, this would hardly be in keeping with the ethos of promoting sound ethical business.

“In fact the inclusion in the tender documents that there would be no claim for damages in the event of withdrawal of a tender, caters for or addresses these types of scenario.

“As for the argument that the plaintiff nonetheless had performed in terms of the unsigned contract, signifying a general acceptance of the terms and conditions in the draft document, this did not dispense with the need for a properly executed contract.

“Indeed, a provision on termination on notice was included in the draft agreement whose thrust the defendant attempted to drawn on in good faith without prejudice to compensate the plaintiff for the minimum roll out begun pending certain necessary information that was to be availed by the defendant regarding its employees.

“This was before the unsavoury details concerning the plaintiff emerged. That offer to compensate had been the decent thing to do given that strictly speaking, in terms of the tender documents, there was no obligation to give anything and the contract had not been signed.

“It was the plaintiff who refused the offer, opting instead to try and squeeze specific performance or alternatively to reap millions from the defendant.

“Plaintiff must bear the consequences of its choices. As the saying goes ‘a feather in hand is better than a bird in the air’. That offer to compensate on the basis of three months’ notice was without prejudice and it was rejected.”

Highlanders Football Club assistant coach Joel Luphahla has revealed that the club is targeting a championship title in the 2023 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season slated for March.

Luphahla believes Highlanders need to end the league title drought this season.

Bosso were last crowned champions in 2006 when they were still coached by Methembe Ndlovu.

In an interview with FARPost, Luphahla said: “It’s been long since we last won the league. Being Highlanders, there is always that push and pressure to win the league title, and our head coach (Baltemar Brito) wants it this season.

“The head coach says, we may be far from what we want the team to be, but we have to meet some of the targets and end the league title drought.

“The good thing is that we retained the bulk of our team. Our targets remain the same but we have a number of factors to consider. However, we stick to what our head coach wants us to achieve.”

The former champions are currently in the border town of Beitbridge for their pre-season camp that started on Monday and is set to end on Thursday.

Italy ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi acquitted in ‘bunga-bunga’ party case

Italian former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been acquitted of bribing witnesses to lie about his notorious “bunga-bunga” parties.

The billionaire media tycoon, 86, was accused of paying young showgirls and others to give false testimony about the allegedly raunchy parties.

The other 28 defendants were also acquitted – among them Moroccan dancer Karima El Mahroug, known as Ruby, who figured in an earlier Berlusconi case.

Berlusconi has faced many court cases.

In the Ruby case, the right-wing senator won an appeal against his conviction for paying for sex with an underage prostitute. Ruby and he both denied having had sex and she denied having ever been a prostitute.

In his various court cases, he has denied wrongdoing, accusing prosecutors of pursuing a political vendetta against him. He insisted the parties – described by some as “orgies” – were actually elegant dinners.

The only Berlusconi trial that ended in a conviction was his sentencing for tax fraud in 2013. Given his age, Italian justice treated him leniently – he did a year of community service at a care home near Milan.

Berlusconi was prime minister three times between 1994 and 2011. He was accused of giving witnesses millions of euros in hush money in the “bunga-bunga” trial, but said the money was given as compensation for reputational damage to people linked to the notorious parties.

He was temporarily barred from political office over his conviction for tax fraud, but won a seat in the Senate in 2022 elections.

His Forza Italia party plays a key role in Italy’s ruling right-wing coalition, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. She hailed his acquittal as “excellent news that puts an end to a long legal case that also had important repercussions on Italian political and institutional life”.

As Italian leader, Berlusconi forged a close friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. And this week, Berlusconi made controversial comments about the war in Ukraine which were condemned by Kyiv.

On Sunday, Berlusconi said he would “never” have met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, as Ms Meloni did last Thursday in Brussels on the sidelines of an EU summit.

Berlusconi said that if President Zelensky had stopped attacking the two Russian-backed regions of Donbas in eastern Ukraine, the war would not have happened. “So I judge very, very negatively the behaviour of this gentleman,” he said.

Ms Meloni reaffirmed Italian support for Mr Zelensky after Berlusconi’s remarks. And Zelensky aide Mykhailo Podolyak denounced Berlusconi as “a VIP agitator who is acting in the interests of Russian propaganda”. “He is bartering away Italy’s reputation for his friendship with Putin,” he said. At least 73 migrants are missing and presumed dead after their boat sank off the Libyan coast, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Only seven people survived Tuesday’s shipwreck but are in “extremely dire conditions” in hospital.

So far 11 bodies have been recovered by the Libyan Red Crescent and police.

The boat was heading to Europe on a route the IOM has called “the world’s deadliest migratory sea crossing.”

More than 130 people have already died this year making the dangerous journey over the Mediterranean Sea.

The IOM added that more than 1,450 deaths were recorded by its Missing Migrants Project last year.

“This situation is intolerable,” said Safa Msehli, a spokesperson for the group.

Ms Msehli said more efforts were needed to “increase search and rescue capacity, establish clear and safe disembarkation mechanisms as well as safe and regular pathways to migration to reduce dangerous journeys”. BBC News

Gloria Orwoba: Kenyan senator asked to leave over ‘period stain’

A female Kenyan senator who was asked to leave parliament because of an apparent blood stain on her trousers has told the BBC she was proud to stand up against “period shame.”

Gloria Orwoba said she had noticed the stain before entering the building.

“Since I am always advocating against period shame, I thought I should go ahead and walk the talk,” she said.

Some MPs, including another female senator, criticised her, saying she was being disrespectful.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Sen Tabitha Mutinda asked the speaker to rule on whether Ms Orwoba had adhered to the house’s dress code, saying she found it uncomfortable and inappropriate.

“You don’t understand if she’s on the normal woman cycle or she’s faking it, and it is so indecent,” said Ms Mutinda. She added there was a better way to raise this issue and this was not setting a good example to young women and girls.

Ms Orowba responded by saying she was disappointed to be questioned over “an accident that is natural… I have stained my clothes”.

“I think I’m dressed as per the standing orders – I’m covered, I have a suit, I have collars, I’m just short of a tie,” she told the senate, dressed in a white trouser suit.

Ms Orowba said her experience had made her understand the discrimination faced by some girls in Kenya when they are on their period.

“We have a girl who killed herself because of the same issue that I’m going through, and now I understand because it is the women who are trying to make this a crime.”

A male senator also criticised her.

“We have wives and daughters, and they go through these cycles, but it’s a matter to be managed personally without exposing it to other people. What Sen Gloria has done to this house is a disgrace, it is a lot of shame to this house. This must not be allowed to happen,” said Sen Enoch Wambua.

Ms Orowba said staff at the senate had tried to dissuade her from entering the chamber.

“When I got off the car, a senate staff ran towards me to cover me and begged me to go back inside the car. Since I am always advocating against period shame, I thought I should go ahead and walk the talk.”

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that Ms Orowba should leave the chamber.

“Having periods is never a crime,” he said. “Sen Gloria, I sympathise with you that you are going through the natural act of menstruation, you have stained your wonderful suit, I’m asking you to leave so that you go change and come back with clothes that are not stained.”

After leaving the senate building, Ms Orowba did not change her clothes. She spoke to the media and then visited a school in the capital, Nairobi, to distribute sanitary pads.

The senator is behind a motion pushing for an increase in government funding for free sanitary pads and provision of female hygiene products in all public schools. She said the funding would address “period poverty.”

KwaZulu-Natal police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said the gunman had approached AKA from behind and shot him at close range in the side of the head.

A second gunman then started firing to deter onlookers from responding to the “hit”, he added.

One of these rounds killed AKA’s friend, celebrity chef Tibz Motsoane.

The shooting occurred outside a restaurant in the coastal city of Durban on Friday night.

While police work to establish a full picture of what happened to AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, his father has asked people to stop speculating on social media.

Tony Forbes says the family are focusing on giving their son “a dignified send-off”, and he has thanked the many well-wishers whose support is “making it easier to cope”.

He has also paid tribute to Motsoane, saying he was “like a brother” to AKA.

No arrests have yet been made.

But police say they know the identities of the “two shooters”, and are still checking the identities of all of those at the scene in Durban that night.

Investigators are now using the suspects’ data to piece together their communication and movements in the run-up to the killings, Gen Mkhwanazi has told the Newzroom Africa TV channel.

“We know that the aim was to first kill AKA, and the second suspect could have killed any other [person] because they fired a couple of shots – so anybody who was on the way could have been hit,” he says.

AKA is to be buried on Saturday and a public memorial service will be held on Friday afternoon at the Sandton convention centre in the main city, Johannesburg, his father says.

He began his musical career as part of the rap group Entity before he launched his solo career, winning several awards in South Africa for his music.

He was also celebrated internationally, with several nominations for a Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award in the US and an MTV Europe Music Award.

Hours before his death, the 35-year-old posted on social media about his upcoming album, Mass Country, which is set for release later this month.
