HARARE – Masvingo based journalist George Maponga has retained his position as President of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists at the organization’s congress held in Harare on Friday.

Maponga polled 37 votes against 19 votes received by his rival, Jairos Maponga, a senior journalist from Alpha Media Holdings.

Mary Mhlanga, a senior journalist at New Zimbabwe.com was elected vice president

Perfect Hlongwane was retained his position as the General Secretary of the union while the Sunday Mail’s Emmanuel Kafe was elected as the organizing secretary.

Siphathisiwe Mpofu from Star FM and New Zimbabwe.com’s Leopold Munhende were elected committee members.

Police charge journalist over Mnangagwa ‘fleeing’ story he did not write

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested and charged NewZimbabwe.Com journalist Leopold Munhende for publishing falsehoods in connection with a story he said 'he did not write'. Munhende was called by the police on Monday, detained for about five hours before he was charged for communicating falsehoods in a story published on NewZimbabweCom on 21 September 2022 claiming President Emmerson Mnangagwa had fled protesting Zimbabweans in New York.

Covid-19: A personal experience

Some weeks back just before Christmas, I was diagnosed with Covid-19 after developing what I thought was a very bad flu. I had just returned from a workshop in Gweru, where I had interacted with many colleagues. One of them being Foster Dongozi, secretary general of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ). Dongozi passed away a few days after we returned from the workshop. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
