HARARE – In what appears to be a dramatic U-turn from his previous stance, Zimbabwean mixed martial arts star Themba Gorimbo has heaped praise on Zimdancehall star Winky D, describing him as a fearless leader of the youth who boldly speaks truth to power.
Gorimbo stirred controversy last year after downplaying Winky D’s global appeal, suggesting that the artist’s influence did not extend beyond Zimbabwe.
The remarks sparked outrage among Winky D’s loyal fanbase, forcing the UFC fighter to deactivate his social media accounts amid the backlash.
However, in a recent Facebook post, Gorimbo appeared to have softened his stance, praising the chanter for his courage and dedication to the people.
“I will say this — I respect this guy in the entertainment industry. Zero fear, 100% courage. Ndakambobhaiza paya with that joke, hameno zvanga zvandipindawo. But honestly, I respect this gentleman. Big man. Real speaker of the truth. Leader of the youth,” he wrote.
Gorimbo added that, beyond his ambitions in the Octagon, he wanted to be known as someone who stands for the interests of ordinary people.
“I aspire to be the people’s champion before being UFC champion. Speak what’s on everyone’s mind. Speak what they fear,” he added.
Last year, Gorimbo had sparked online fury after declaring himself more well-known than the award-winning artist, saying:
“Vanhu moda kundi jairira, mungandifanandize naWinky? Winky is local and I am global. Pane musiyano. Kana mazogara moziva local and global difference. Compare Winky nanaPashi.”
