“The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) is committed to upholding the highest standards of transparency, governance, and accountability in the management of rugby in Zimbabwe.

“In line with this commitment, the ZRU National Executive Board (NEB) has taken decisive steps to address recent concerns regarding governance and financial management.

“Following recommendations from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) and the outcomes of the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on 6th May 2025, the NEB has resolved to temporarily suspend ZRU President Mr. Losson Mtongwiza and Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa pending further inquiry.

“This action of suspension and the subsequent inquiry are normal procedures when allegations of wrongdoing arise.

“Effective immediately, Mr. Losson Mtongwiza and Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa are required to surrender all rugby-related duties and will not represent any facet of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union during this period of suspension, which will remain in effect until the ongoing inquiry and all related procedures have been fully concluded.

“The ZRU is fully committed to due process and operating within the confines of its constitution.

“The ZRU urges all stakeholders to be responsible in their commentary and acknowledges that any clickbait or sensationalist reporting has the potential to seriously damage and tarnish the reputation of the sport of rugby.

“The ZRU remains committed to maintaining the integrity of Zimbabwean rugby and the trust of its stakeholders, including players, partners, and supporters,” reads part of the ZRU statement.

Furthermore, ZRU said: “The ongoing inquiries will be conducted in accordance with the ZRU Constitution to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability.

“The NEB assures the public that every effort will be made to resolve these matters promptly and fairly, with a view to restoring confidence in the Union’s governance.

“The ZRU remains appreciative of the contributions made by all involved to the development of rugby in Zimbabwe and is committed to maintaining a constructive relationship with all stakeholders as it navigates this challenging period.

“Dr. Tapfuma Parirenyatwa with immediate effect Is the Acting Chairman of the ZRU National Executive Board. Thembelani Ncube remains as the current Vice President. The Zimbabwe Women’s Board, through their internal processes, will announce their stand-in.”

This comes a few weeks after a leaked recording of Mtongwiza where he was heard telling the players bluntly: “If you are here to be paid, don’t come again! We’re not here to pay people. If we don’t have money, we don’t owe you anything!”

The outburst came after reports that players were not paid for recent matches.

Reports suggests, Mtongwiza said payments would only be made upon the return of team equipment.
