Sheffield Wednesday planning to extend Zimbabwean Joey Phuthi’s contract

English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday is reportedly planning to extend Zimbabwean teenager Joey Phuthi’s contract, it has emerged.

As per The Star recently, the club is in “the process of finalising decisions on many of their youth players- including Joey Phuthi and Favour Onukwuli”.

Phuthi is among the academy players who are considered to be key by Sheffield Wednesday.

“The pair are seen as two very exciting players in the Owls academy at present, and have contributed heavily for the U21s this season in their push for a top two finish in the Professional Development League,” added The Star.

Phuthi, who recently turned 19, joined Wednesday when he was aged 13 and signed his first professional contract with the Championship side in July 2023.

His contribution to the club has not gone unnoticed by the media.

“Phuthi has had an eventful season so far, having made his senior debut for Wednesday in the FA Cup,” further wrote the UK online publication.

While the Owls will be letting go of players deemed as excess baggage, they are keen to hold onto Phuthi.
