Herbert Mafawani (40) of 3036 Magamba is said to have taken a tobacco pesticide after failing to stomach the decision by his girlfriend Emmah Nyamba (42) of ZBS 2353, Rusape to terminate their relationship of years in which he was spoiling her.

Mafawani was married and his family had threatened to dump his body at Nyamba’s house accusing her of fleecing their father and relative before chucking him out with nothing.

Manicaland assistant police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean said the incident happened on July 17, 2015.

“At around 8am, Mafawani went to his girlfriend Emma Nyamba’s place at House Number ZBS 2353, Rusape and on arrival, he told his girlfriend that a certain prophet that he had consulted had revealed to him that she was bewitching him,” said Asst Insp Clean.

It is alleged that the two had an intense argument in which Mafawani took Nyamba to task over the money he had entrusted her with. The girlfriend allegedly failed to account for the money and instead called it quits.

“Emma told him that their love affair was over. He left the place and returned around 11am. He tried to engage her so that they would reconcile, but Emma would not budge. She told him that he was no longer welcome in her house and should leave. He sneaked into the toilet where he took a poisonous substance, which is believed to have been in his pocket,” said Asst Insp Clean.

He said Mafawani, who smelt a chemical, then told Nyamba that he had taken a pesticide.

“He told her that he could not stomach being jilted and had taken poison. Nyamba summoned a taxi and rushed him to hospital, where he died on admission,” said Asst Insp Clean.

Mafawani’s relatives suspect foul play.

They argued that their relative was deliberately poisoned. The Mafawanis drove a hearse carrying Herbert’s body to Nyamba’s house where they created a scene that attracted the attention of the neighbourhood. They then took the body to their rural home for burial. Manica Post
