SOUTH AFRICA – Zimbabwean national team goalkeeper Washington Arubi achieved a milestone last week, when he became the only PSL player to have featured in every minute of their outfit’s campaign this season.
Arubi now holds Tuks’ record for the most PSL appearances.
Five other players – Thulani Hlatshwayo (Bidvest Wits), Patrick Tingyemb (Bloemfontein Celtic), Oupa Manyisa (Orlando Pirates) and the Kaizer Chiefs duo of Tefu Mashamaite and Siboniso Gaxa – have been ever-present in the League this term, but have missed matches in other competitions.
Arubi expressed happiness with the achievement.
“It is always a great achievement to always feature in the team as it proves my worthy,” said Arubi.
“I am always working hard to be where I am. With the support I am getting from my teammates, technical team and supporters I will keep going up. My dream is to play all matches for my team as long I am available for selection. As a player I have dreams like everyone. My aim is to make sure that come end of the season I would have played all matches for AmaTuks.”
Arubi has also impressively missed just two games in all competitions that the AmaTuks have played since he arrived at the start of their debut PSL season in 2012.
The 29-year-old sat out just one match last term, as he did the season before and this also set him up a target of being crowned the league’s best player this season.
In 2012, the Zimbabwe Warriors shot stopper was crowned the best at club level, but should have looked with envy as his Kaizer Chiefs counterpart, Itumeleng Khune, grabbed almost everything on offer in the league’s overall crowning ceremony.
Arubi is also eyeing to be awarded for his sterling performances this season.
“I want to be the Goalkeeper and Player of the Season. I have done well and gained a lot of experience playing here since I arrived at AmaTuks and want to achieve my dream,” said the goalkeeper, who has previously starred for Highlanders and Dynamos back home.
