VICTORIA FALLS – Miss World Zimbabwe organisers have evicted 41 girls from the national pageant’s boot camp that began in Victoria Falls two weeks ago.
Tendai Chirau, Miss Zimbabwe Trust’s communications and programmes officer, told the Daily News that the 41 girls were part of the 57-strong group that turned up for the boot camp.
“Miss World Zimbabwe initially planned to have 91 hopefuls in the boot camp, but only 57 showed up. So far 41 girls have been evicted like we promised when the camp started,” said Chirau.
“We are trimming down and targeting only 16 girls for the finals that will be held at Mermaid Pool in Shamva on April 24.”
He added that the girls were evicted for a number of reasons which included poor public speaking skills, lack of eloquence and poor knowledge of current affairs.
Linda Munemo, the media liason officer of the trust said the girls’ poor turnout was mainly because most of them were committed at school.
“Several delegates from all provinces failed to make it to the boot camp. Most of the school girls had school commitments. We had prepared for 91, but the number was reduced. I cannot say it affected us in any way because at the end of the day we would have evicted them as well,” said Munemo.
“Right now we are left with 16 girls and there will be a sashaying ceremony on April 17 in Harare.
“Thereafter the remaining 16 will be rehearsing for the finals. But the sashaying does not guarantee a place in the finals; the girls have to adhere to our rules. Any form of misconduct will result in disqualification,” she said. Daily News
