The leader of the Democratic Party (DP) in Zimbabwe, Wurayayi Zembe has criticized the current coalition government for failing to deliver real change to the country.
Speaking to SW Radio Africa’s Lance Guma on his Behind the Headlines series Zembe said ‘they have not really started to tackle the problems of this country. We seem to have more problems.’
Zembe said the strike threat by civil servants masked a big problem of salaries not matching what was required to survive. This he said compromised the whole civil service.
“The farming community is in trouble because people have not received the inputs that they need. We have gone half way through the rainy season and the rains are patchy this season. It’s another looming agricultural disaster.’
He said in industry ‘nothing is working. We have not seen an increase in utility levels or operating capacity of our industry. They are not opening up.’
‘I was reading in the Financial Gazette, there are now more farm invasions even in farms that are covered by bilateral trade arrangements and yet South Africa was the first to sign with the current regime.’
Turning to the ongoing talks aimed at ironing out differences between the political partners in the implementation of the coalition deal Zembe said there was clearly no progress. ‘The parties are failing to agree on the fundamental issues and they continue to dodge issues.’
Zembe also attacked the MDC for surrendering the ‘people’s vote’ to Mugabe and said the Zanu PF leader had come out stronger in the coalition arrangement. He suggested a ‘constitutional process supervised by SADC, the African Union and the United Nations, culminating in fresh elections that will be free and fair.’
