English Premiership side Portsmouth considered making a bid to bring fans favourite Benjani back to Fratton Park.
The Zimbabwe striker was on manager Paul Hart’s transfer hit-list, but concerns over a thigh problem put paid to the chances of his return.
The transfer window closed Tuesday with three new additions making it 13 players in for Pompey this summer.
Benjani has admitted he would love to return to the club he joined in 2006 before leaving for Manchester City two years later.
Pompey chief-executive Peter Storrie said: ‘It was something we looked at but he has injury problems.’
The 31-year-old joined Pompey from Auxerre in January 2006 for £4.1million before departing to join Manchester City in February 2008.
The Zimbabwe international has scored just six goals in 24 appearances in all competitions in his time at Eastlands largely due to a string of injuries. The News
