Zodwa Mkandla fights for disability rights, donates electric wheelchairs

HARARE – The Zodwa Mkandla Foundation, a Zimbabwean organisation named after its founder, businesswoman Zodwa Mkandla, is on a mission to improve the lives of people with disabilities by providing electric wheelchairs.

The foundation, which was launched last week, works closely with local communities to identify those who would benefit the most from an electric wheelchair.

“We were inspired by a strong desire to make a positive impact in the lives of those in need,” Mkandla said during an exclusive interview with Nehanda Radio.

“Mobility is a fundamental human right, and we recognized the importance of providing access to mobility devices for individuals with disabilities.

“We partner with healthcare providers and disability organisations to conduct assessments and evaluations,” she explained.

“This ensures that the wheelchairs are allocated to those who will benefit the most.”

The impact of the program is expected to be significant.

“Our aim is to significantly improve the quality of life for our beneficiaries,” she said

“Electric wheelchairs will enhance their mobility, confidence, and overall well-being by providing them with the means to move around independently and participate more fully in daily activities.”

Mkandla explained the application process, saying: “Individuals can apply by filling out an application form, providing relevant medical documentation, and undergoing an assessment by our team.

But the foundation’s commitment goes beyond just providing the wheelchairs.

“We have established partnerships with local service providers and technicians to ensure that the wheelchairs are regularly maintained and serviced,” she stated.

“Recipients will also receive guidance on proper care and maintenance to maximize the lifespan of the wheelchairs.”

The Zodwa Mkandla Foundation pledged a long-term vision for the program.

“Our goal is to secure sustainable funding through partnerships, sponsorships, and fundraising initiatives. This will allow us to expand our reach and continue to support individuals in need of mobility assistance.”

The foundation says while the current focus is on electric wheelchairs, there are plans for future growth.

“We are open to exploring additional programs and services that align with our mission of improving the lives of marginalized communities,” she said.

“We are always looking for opportunities to expand our impact and address emerging needs.”

The Zodwa Mkandla Foundation believes that access to mobility is a basic human right.

“By providing electric wheelchairs to those in need, we are not just giving them a means of transportation but also empowering them to live their lives to the fullest,” Mkandla said.

“We are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our beneficiaries and creating a more inclusive society for all,” she added.
