Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened at 28287 Hillside at about 7pm.  He identified the deceased as Tachawanda Chiminya of 5262 Mushandike Street.

He said the suspect, Naboth Machete (age not given) of Hillside disappeared from the scene after stabbing Chiminya and is still at large.

“Machete disappeared after stabbing Chiminya. Police have since launched a manhunt for him and we promise that the long arm of the law will catch up with him, we appeal to members of the public with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect,” said Insp Zhanero.

He said on the fateful day the pair was building a house in the same suburb when a misunderstanding ensued over a debt. “On the day in question, Macheke and Chiminya were building at 28287 Hillside.

During the course of their work, Chiminya who owed Macheke $20 mounted a ladder and got on top of the house which was at roofing level stage.

“When he was climbing, Macheke saw a $20 note which was about to fall from Chiminya’s pocket,” said Insp Zhanero. On realising that he had money, Macheke reminded Chiminya that he owed him and was supposed to hand over the $20 to him.

Insp Zhanero said Chiminya gave excuses, something that did not go down well with Macheke.

“When Chiminya, who had already disembarked, resisted handing over the money to Mucheke, a misunderstanding arose leading to the former pulling out a knife. He then stabbed Chiminya on the left jaw behind the left ear and then fled from the scene,” he said.

Chiminya sustained a deep stab wound on the jaw and was rushed to Masvingo General Hospital where he was treated and discharged on the same day.

“After being discharged he went to make a report to the police before leaving for home. On Wednesday at about 2pm, while still at home, his condition deteriorated and was taken back to Masvingo General Hospital where he died on admission,” said Insp Zhanero.
