Biden’s low-key strategy vexes Trump, but in-person campaigning beckons

0

Donald Trump’s bungled coronavirus response and crackdowns on protesters have thrust Joe Biden into the driver’s seat of the US presidential election, but the Democratic challenger must decide when to start campaigning in earnest and battle his opponent head on.

Polls show American voters have little faith in Trump’s ability to defeat the pandemic, and 130 days out from November’s election Biden has surged into a commanding lead despite holding few in-person events since mid-March.

But with campaign inflection points fast approaching — notably his pick of a running mate, expected in early August, and the Democratic National Convention later that month — Biden must consider how to balance adhering to coronavirus safety measures and appearing as more than just a virtual candidate.

Hurling criticism at the president from his Delaware home is not a viable long-term strategy for Biden, common sense and experts dictate.

“I don’t see how that’s sustainable through the fall election,” professor Barry Burden, director of the Election Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told AFP.

“There will come a point where Biden will need to be a physical presence on the campaign trail, if only to reassure voters he is a real person, in good health and ready to serve.”

That coming out should occur in July, Burden said, so Biden can start honing his public messaging before sharing a stage with his new vice presidential pick.

Biden must be wary of appearing contradictory if he were to hold crowded rallies after warning such gatherings are dangerous.

Mocked by Team Trump for repeatedly broadcasting from his basement studio, Biden appears to be making a gradual shift toward in-person events.

On Thursday he travelled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he wore a mask and sat with families in a brick-lined garden to discuss health care.

In a speech minutes later, he savaged Trump for seeking to dismantle Obamacare.

“We’ve seen that same callousness in his handling of the coronavirus,” Biden said, evoking Trump’s refusal to heed the advice of his own scientists and wear a mask, calling the disease the “kung flu,” and saying he would like to “slow” down virus testing.

“He’s like a child who can’t believe this has happened to him,” Biden said.

“His job isn’t to whine about it, his job is to do something about it.”

– ‘Important contrast’ –

Trump is adrift in troubling waters. Scientists say his coronavirus strategy has largely failed, and his former national security advisor John Bolton just accused him of being unfit for office.

The president was rebuked twice last week by a conservative-leaning Supreme Court on closely watched cases regarding immigration and gay rights.

And criticism has poured in over his handling of coast-to-coast protests against racial injustice, and how his toxic rhetoric served to stoke divisions.

He has scorned Biden as a “puppet of the radical left” and said China wants Biden to win so they can manipulate a pliant Democrat.

The attacks have fallen flat, largely because Biden is not out on the stump engaging in campaign combat.

Trump is increasingly turning to the economy as a potential re-election savior.

A mild turnaround before the election could help the president and complicate Biden’s message, according to Burden.

“Even if the economy is not doing well, if it’s improved, then he will be able to tell a story about bringing America back,” the professor said.

Meanwhile the parties’ official nominating conventions near. While Trump is demanding a massive crowd at the Republican event, Biden is opting for safety, as the Democratic Party said this week it will hold a largely virtual convention.

Biden can no longer count on a traditional overgrown spectacle, but opportunity exists, insists Amy Dacey, a Democratic strategist.

The Biden campaign is “reaching people where they are and not always asking them to come to where he is,” Dacey said. “That’s a really important contrast.”

Another is Biden’s human touch, but the pandemic may erase that advantage. He can still be a consoling presence, however, a distinction from Trump who is often seen as insensitive to people’s concerns.

Trump is not widely popular, but if anything he has proven resilient.

Suffering in the sharp media glare, he is annoyed that his opponent avoids it.

Trump’s campaign has taken to ridiculing Biden for remaining in the shadows, Kyle Kondik of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics wrote in a recent newsletter.

“They need to draw Biden out and hope he makes mistakes, so Trump can make himself look better by comparison.” AFP

Former Burundi president to be buried in state funeral

Thousands of Burundians on Friday lined the road to the capital Gitega as the body of former president Pierre Nkurunziza was escorted under heavy security for a state funeral after his sudden death earlier this month.

Nkurunziza, who ruled the country for 15 years, died at the aged 55 of what the government said was “heart failure”.

But speculation is rife he may have caught the coronavirus, as his wife had been flown to Nairobi for treatment for the virus just two weeks prior.

The funeral ceremonies began with an “homage by his wife, Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza, his children and those close to him” in an intimate gathering at the hospital in the central city of Karuzi where he died on June 8, a governmental source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Nkurunziza died shortly after an election won by his handpicked successor Evariste Ndayishimiye, who was sworn in last week.

Friday was declared a national holiday for the funeral, and school children in uniform, and citizens lined the roads waiting for the funeral convoy to pass.

The stadium in Gitega where the funeral ceremony is to be held was packed with citizens from across the country, all dressed in white at the request of authorities.

Nkurunziza will be buried at a monument recently built in Gitega at the site of another structure which was to be dedicated to victims of the country’s various crises over the years, but was never inaugurated.

Nkurunziza, a devout evangelical who believed he was chosen by God to lead Burundi, left behind a deeply isolated country in political and economic turmoil.

His 2015 run for a third term in office sparked protests and a failed coup, with violence leaving at least 1,200 dead while some 400,000 fled the country.

A climate of fear marked by a crackdown on the opposition and media settled over Burundi, while a personality cult grew around Nkurunziza which saw the ruling party name him a “visionary” and “supreme guide for patriotism.”

UN human rights investigators have said the period since 2015 has been marked by likely crimes against humanity committed by state forces, citing extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, disappearances, torture and sexual violence. AFP

Top lawyer leads ‘Moyo must go’ campaign

Prominent human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa has joined thousands of disgruntled health workers and ordinary citizens in calling for Health minister Obadiah Moyo to be fired from government over alleged incompetence and mishandling of the US$60 million tender for procurement of COVID-19 test kits.

Mtetwa’s petition to Mnangagwa, which was signed by 17 899 Zimbabweans, was copied to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda.

Health workers have, on several occasions, called on Mnangagwa to fire Moyo.

The prominent human rights lawyer said Moyo had dismally failed to discharge his duties as expected of a Health minister, including giving misleading statements on the country’s state of preparedness for the COVID-19, resulting in erratic, unco-ordinated interventions and spike in infections.

“We, the Concerned Citizens of Zimbabwe, hereby petition you, Your Excellency, to relieve and dismiss, with immediate effect, the Honourable Obadiah Moyo, from his portfolio as the Minister of Health and Child Care whose tenure at the ministry has been an unmitigated disaster,” the petition read.

“We bring this petition as citizens of Zimbabwe both within and outside Zimbabwe who have been negatively impacted by the decline in the health delivery system since Moyo took over this important portfolio.”

“Having been closely monitoring how Moyo has failed to handle genuine grievances of health professionals across the board, we are concerned at the continued deterioration of the public health delivery system under the stewardship of Honourable Obadiah Moyo,” she said.

“On February 3, 2020, the Honourable Obadiah Moyo assured the nation, through the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health that Zimbabwe was fully prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic and having noted the dismal failure to adequately prepare for the virus, thus leading to erratic and unco-ordinated interventions that have led to avoidable death and infections.

“He has failed to ensure that all public health institutions have adequate stocks of drugs and other necessary medical materials.

“He has failed to ensure the setting up of affordable, accessible and properly staffed testing centres. He has failed to make adequate and acceptable arrangements for returnees who have been subjected to unsanitary quarantine conditions.”

Mtetwa further said Moyo failed to ensure the constant and adequate availability of personal protective equipment for all health professionals on the frontline of the pandemic and to ensure that returnees are equally protected from contracting the virus at such centres.

Moyo was last week granted $50 000 bail following his arrest on allegations of unprocedurally awarding a COVID-19 equipment tender to suspected criminal Delish Nguwaya of Drax International. News Day

Zupco crews on go-slow

Drivers of Mutare-based conventional buses operating under the Zupco franchise have gone on a go-slow to force government to review their daily commission, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The go-slow started on Wednesday evening, resulting in some stranded commuters walking home late into the night and continued yesterday with no solution in sight.

A public transport operator in Mutare, who declined to be named said they were getting $4 000 per bus, while commuter omnibus operators were getting $1 000 per kombi per day.

The operator said they were pushing for at least $15 390 per bus.

“We are on a go-slow because of the paltry commission we are being given. Just imagine that we are getting $4 000 per day, while kombis are getting $1 000,” he said.

“It’s peanuts, in fact, the government is now benefiting because a kombi is cashing about $3 000 per day and if I was doing it alone, I could get much higher.”

He added: “It seems it is us who are now subsidising our buses. We want the government to pay us at least $15 000 per day.”

Another operator weighed in, saying: “We are on a go-slow, but what we are avoiding is to park at all because we don’t have any source of income, may our government will help,” he pleaded.
Kombis plying the high-density suburbs routes in Mutare are charging $8, while buses are charging $4.

Zupco chief executive officer Evaristo Mudangwe said he was busy and had promised to call back later, but had not done so at the time of going to print last night. News Day

Kazembe cornered over MDC ‘abductees’ case

Human rights lawyers have put Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe on the spot, demanding that he proves State claims that three MDC Alliance officials currently in remand prison raised false allegations of abduction and torture by security forces to tarnish government’s image.

The lawyers, Mbidzo, Muchadehama and Makoni threatened legal action against Kazembe early this month after he told the nation that the three MDC Alliance officials Joanah Mamombe (Harare West MP), Netsai Marowa and Cecilia Chimbiri had faked their abduction.

The human rights defenders accused government officials of conniving with the police in maligning their clients who also include the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the Zimbabwe Association for Doctors for Human Rights.

On June 4, Kazembe claimed at a Press conference that the State had unearthed evidence that the trio staged their abduction following a flash demonstration in Warren Park, Harare, in contravention of the lockdown restrictions.

Kazembe said government had obtained a graphic map of the trio’s movements on the day of their “alleged abduction” and came to the conclusion that the allegations were stage-managed.

In a letter dated June 16, the rights’ lawyers gave Kazembe seven days to prove all his claims.

The minister is yet to respond.

“Despite the grace period we gave you to respond to our specific reasonable demands contained therein, you have failed to furnish proof of all the factual allegations you made,” the lawyers said in a letter to the minister dated June 24.

“This gives the inescapable impression that you intentionally convened a Press conference to mislead the nation and the world at large on issues that have no factual basis and thereby deliberately soiled the good names of our clients, ourselves, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights, among others.”

In his statement, Kazembe claimed that two human rights doctors Fortune Nyamande and Norman Matara, who lived outside the country, had only jetted in to participate in the “fake abductions”.

The lawyers also demanded in their earlier letter that government issues a public apology for displaying “malicious intent to leave the names and reputations of all persons you intentionally slandered permanently soiled.”

“… disclose the various agencies involved in the investigations and thereby proving the unconstitutionality of your actions and the blatant disregard by you of our clients’ constitutional liberties.”

The lawyers demanded that Kazembe disclose to them how information only shared with the police ended up in the hands of Zanu PF functionaries. H-Metro

Chimombe ‘son’ fights for recognition

South Africa based crooner Davitah Chimombe, who claims to be the late legend James Chimombe’s forgotten son, is begging for acceptance in the family.

Davitah, who has been plying his trade across the Limpopo for a while, said he did not want anything from the family other than recognition.

The talented crooner, who is set to launch his album online next month, said he wanted to be linked with his family and keep the music legacy alive.

“I do not want anything from them, I just want them to acknowledge me that I am one of them that’s all.

“This issue has been affecting me over the years and I have come to a point where I could not give up on my wish to be recognised,” he said.

Asked whether he has proof that he was indeed Chimombe’s son, he said:

“I know many people would say I am after their riches or fame but I am part of them I have everything to show for it.

“I have every document to prove what I am saying, this is not coming from nowhere.

“Why would I lie because I have proof. Like I said earlier on, I am not after their riches if there are any but I just want recognition which is important in our culture.”

Davitah said he has since clashed with Chimombe’s eldest child Tendai, who disowned him.

“I know my sister (Tendai) won’t take this lightly when you ask her about me but she is also a child like myself.

“I have been trying to reach out to her but she called me a fraud, which is very bad.

“I would not fight her as such but the truth shall set me free once the time is right; I know they will surely accept me soon and recognise me because we are of the same blood.

“At the moment, I am concentrating on my career but recognition is what I want,” he added.

In another interview, Tendai who is the eldest child of the late Chimombe, dismissed claims by Davitah as crazy and nonsensical.

She said her family does not know Davitah adding that he was a ‘fraud’ trying to look for fame using her late father’s name but he will not succeed.

“He is crazy we do not know him in our family, you can even ask any member of our family from father’s brothers to our cousins, they do not know this character,” she said.

“I will ask one of my father’s younger brothers to tell me his history and will share with you.

“This guy we do not even know him and we have never had his name anywhere,” she said. H-Metro

Robbery syndicate hit Bulawayo

Parking in Bulawayo’s city centre has turned into a nightmare for motorists who risk having their cars broken into or being robbed at gunpoint.

A robbery syndicate is targeting unattended cars parked in front of shops and business premises.

And although police have been arresting suspects every week since the start of the national lockdown, they could not immediately give exact figures.

However, five suspects linked to the crimes of robbery and theft from cars appeared in court between last Friday and Monday.

One of the latest victims to fall prey to the gangs, Ms Lasta Nkala (39) of Emganwini had to be admitted to a local hospital after she was stabbed as she clung onto the bonnet of a getaway car used by suspects who had robbed her of her valuables.

Ms Nkala turned stuntwoman after she jumped onto the bonnet and held onto the wipers of the getaway car while blood was dripping from her hip.

The robbers had snatched her laptop, cellphone and jacket on May 29, at around 4PM, outside a fast food outlet in the city.

Ms Nkala told Chronicle that the driver of the gateway car, a white Honda Fit, only stopped after about 60 metres when he was blocked by another motorist.

The robbers then disembarked and took to their heels, with members of the public in hot pursuit.

“The driver jumped out of the vehicle while brandishing a knife, but that did not deter members of the public from chasing after him. When he made the move towards a nearby meat wholesale outlet, a shopper who was waiting to get in to be served kicked him with a safety shoe and he fell,” she said.

Ms Nkala recently lost US$300 after robbers unlocked her car and stole a handbag containing the money.

Mr Tichaona Tarinda (39) of Luveve, who is a forex dealer, said the syndicate of robbers uses different Honda Fit vehicles with fake number plates and tinted windows.

He said six robbers who had been monitoring his movements in the city centre, followed him to Luveve in a blue Honda Fit where they blocked his car, a Mercedes Benz.

“Two of the robbers got out of their car armed with a pistol and rifle and smashed the window of my car on the driver’s side. They forced open the door and dragged me out of the car and demanded money,” he said.

Mr Tarinda tried to wrestle with one of the suspects who was armed with a pistol but four others got out of the Honda Fit, opened the rear door of his car and took a small bag containing US$2 800 and R3 500.

They rushed back into their getaway car and sped off.

Three of the suspects, Khawulani Dube, Candy Nyathi (28) and Nigel Matengo, all from Entumbane, have since been arrested for armed robbery and theft from a motor vehicle and appeared in court. They were remanded in custody to July 27.

Another victim, Mr Pardon Pakamani (28) of Queens Park lost a laptop, US$9 000, R11 200 and $3 500 after the suspects smashed a rear quarter glass of his Toyota Vitz to gain access.
Nyathi was arrested in connection with the offence.

He was caught on CCTV camera parking his car, a grey Nissan Sulphy near Mr Pakamani’s car before smashing the window before stealing the money and laptop.

On Wednesday, police arrested a suspected notorious thief for stealing from cars while his three accomplices escaped following a dramatic incident.

During patrol, traffic police spotted Sifelani Mapfumo (42) from Njube and his three alleged accomplices who are on the run trying to break into a car in Bulawayo’s city centre.

The incident occurred at about 2PM along Jason Moyo Street between 13th Avenue and 14th Avenue, leading to a high-speed chase.

In his bid to evade arrest, Mapfumo who was driving a silver-grey Honda Fit, encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic as he tried to make a U-turn along Jason Moyo and 14th Avenue.

Mapfumo’s car rammed into two vehicles before coming to a halt and three passengers escaped, leaving him alone.

Traffic police managed to apprehend him and impounded his car.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said upon Mapfumo’s arrest, it was established that he was a wanted suspected for theft from vehicles.

“In his car there were some weapons used by syndicates who are used into breaking into vehicles. The items include several pairs of scissors, screw drivers, spark plugs, anti-car lockers. When Mapfumo was apprehended, some members of the public identified him as one of the notorious people stealing from cars in the city. We believe that his arrest will result in several outstanding cases being cleared,” said Insp Ncube.

“We are not so worried about his accomplices who escaped as we believe, we now have their links and cops will be on their case soon.”

He said members of the public could have assisted traffic cops in apprehending the culprits but they opted to take pictures of the unfolding drama.

Inspector Ncube said they were investigating a number of cases involving theft from motor vehicles. He said unregistered Honda Fits mounted with fake number plates are mostly being used by the syndicates as getaway cars.

“They target mostly unattended cars parked in the central business district. These gangs usually park behind or near their targeted victims’ vehicles before they smash door glasses and steal money and valuables,” said Insp Ncube.

He said the suspects follow and monitor their targeted victims’ movements looking for cash, especially forex and valuables such as laptops and cellphones.

“We urge members of the public to make sure that they remove their valuables and money especially when parking their cars or alternatively someone should remain behind guarding the car,” said Insp Ncube.

He said they have since deployed police, some in plain clothes and intensified surveillances and investigations and arrested some suspects.

“Almost every week we are arresting some gangs linked to these syndicates, but we are concerned that they continue to mushroom. Although we are accounting for these criminals and impounding their cars, the numbers are not conclusive,” said Insp Ncube.

Some of the cars being used in committing these crimes would have been are stolen and later dumped.

Insp Ncube warned members of the public against offering lifts to strangers as well as boarding strangers’ vehicles to avoid putting their lives at risk. The Chronicle

Liverpool win Premier League: Reds’ 30-year wait for top-flight title ends

0

Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a top-flight title is over after Manchester City lost 2-1 at Chelsea on Thursday night to confirm the Reds as Premier League champions.
liverpoolJurgen Klopp’s side needed one victory to seal the league but City’s failure to win means they cannot be caught.

It is Liverpool’s 19th top-flight title and their first since 1989-90.

Despite being urged to “stay home” by the city’s metro mayor because of coronavirus, thousands of fans gathered at Anfield to celebrate.

Many of the supporters who congregated at the club’s ground wore face masks and some lit flares.

“It is unbelievable. It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“It’s an incredible achievement by my players and it’s a huge joy for me to coach them.

“I haven’t waited 30 years, I have been here for four-and-a-half years, but it is quite an achievement, especially with the three-month break because nobody knew if we could go on.

“I know it is difficult for people in this moment but we could not hold back. We will enjoy this with our supporters when we can.”

As the global pandemic disrupted life in England and led to the suspension of the Premier League for three months, Reds supporters endured a nervous wait to see how the season would be concluded, with some early suggestions it might have been declared null and void, thus wiping their remarkable efforts from the record books.

Thankfully for them, that did not come to pass, and the Premier League’s return this month enabled them to cap their stunning success.

However, because of the measures put in place in response to the virus, the Reds will not be able to celebrate their long-awaited success with their supporters immediately, at least not in the traditional sense.

As with Wednesday’s impressive 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, when they next play at Anfield – against Aston Villa on Sunday, 5 July, and for their two other remaining home games – it will be behind closed doors.

As things stand it also seems unlikely they will be able to partake in any of the usual public events in Liverpool, such as an open-top bus parade around the city.

By quirk of fate, though, the next time they take to the field will be at the side they have beaten to this season’s title and who pipped them so narrowly last campaign, Manchester City.

A record-breaking season

Winning the title was always the main aim for a club which had endured such a long wait to be crowned champions of England again, having earned that honour 11 times between 1973 and 1990.

But having achieved that ambition things could get better yet, with City’s 100-point total for a season one of numerous records Liverpool can still break.

Klopp’s side have produced one of the most memorable campaigns in Premier League history, amassing 86 points already, with a record of 28 victories, two draws and a single defeat from their 31 games.

Such has been their dominance, at one stage they led the table by 25 points – a record gap between a side in first and second in English top-flight history.

Also still a possibility are the most wins in a season (the record is 32), most home wins (18), most away wins (16) and biggest winning margin (19 points).

Their title win this season is the earliest on record, at least with regard to games remaining, with the Reds having seven still to play.

That it is not the earliest title win by date is only because of the halting of football in England between March and May as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thirty years of hurt…

Liverpool’s triumph represents a huge moment for their fans, who grew accustomed to success in the 1970s and 1980s, including a run between the 1972-73 and 1990-91 seasons in which they only failed to finish first or second in the league once.

They have not been without silverware in the past 30 years, winning three FA Cups, four League Cups, a Uefa Cup, the Champions League twice – the latest coming last season under Klopp – as well as three Super Cups and one Club World Cup.

However, since Kenny Dalglish led them to the First Division championship, they have had to endure three decades without league success, during which their record tally of titles was surpassed by rivals Manchester United, who have 20 to their name.

It was during this period that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson famously revelled in having “knocked Liverpool off their perch”.

The Reds have come close during that time to restoring themselves to the top of the English game, finishing second in the Premier League on four occasions.

Gerard Houllier (2001-02) and Rafael Benitez (2008-09) both took them close.

Famously, in the 2013-14 season, Brendan Rodgers’ side looked as though they were going to take the crown but a late-season slump – synonymous with a Steven Gerrard slip that enabled Chelsea to score and win at Anfield – saw them fall agonisingly short.

Last season, they racked up a stunning 97 points, losing only one game all campaign, but had the misfortune of coming up against an even better Manchester City side, who beat them to the title by a point. No side had ever achieved so many points without winning the league.

Klopp takes Reds from 10th to title

The appointment of Klopp has been pivotal to Liverpool’s rise in recent seasons to this moment of success.

The German arrived at Anfield in October 2015 following the sacking of Rodgers and with the club 10th in the Premier League.

He arrived with a record of success, having led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League final, and with a reputation for fast-paced, high-pressing attacking play, which he described as “heavy metal football”.

The club has not only seen an improvement in its style of play but also its results, with his four full seasons to date yielding finishing positions of fourth, fourth, second and now first.

Intelligent dealing in the transfer market has also been key to his success, with prolific front three Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all arriving during Klopp’s reign. The trio have scored a sensational 211 goals in less than three seasons (92 for Salah, 65 for Mane and 54 for Firmino).

The additions of world-class goalkeeper Alisson and centre-back Virgil van Dijk were also crucial.

Klopp has also improved players who were at the club before he arrived, including midfielder Jordan Henderson – his captain – and young full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The German is the only Reds manager since Dalglish left (including the Scot himself during a second spell from January 2011 to May 2012) with a win percentage over 60.

Dalglish delivered Liverpool their 16th, 17th and 18th league titles and now, after 30 years, the Reds have found a fitting successor to provide them with their 19th. – BBC Sport

Zifa fails to avail bank statement

ZIFA had by end of business yesterday not availed its bank statement to vice-president Gift Banda’s legal team ahead of today’s condonation application to the association’s Appeals Committee.

The Zifa Appeals Committee headed by lawyer Stead Kachere threw out the initial appeal after the association failed to attach proof of payment of the appeal fee as stipulated under Article 7.1 of the Zifa Rules and Regulations.

The Appeals Committee ruled that in the absence of proof of payment as required by the rules, the appeal before it was a legal nullity and Banda must be reinstated as Zifa vice-president.

Zifa argued that it paid the appeal fee, with communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela telling Chronicle Sport that payment was done on March 9, a day before the appeal papers were filed with the Appeals Committee.

Zifa said proof of payment was with its accountant who failed to submit it to the Appeals Committee due to the national lockdown restrictions despite the fact that the lockdown started on March 30, which was 21 days after the day the association says it paid the appeal fees.

The association also had more than two months to provide proof of payment after the Appeals Committee informed both parties on March 10 that the matter would be heard on June 2.

Last week, a receipt bearing payment of $120 000 was shown to Chronicle Sport as ‘proof’ of payment of the appeal fee.

The appeal fee last ratified by the Zifa Congress is $3 000 and no review was done at the May 25, 2019, congress held in Harare.

This year’s congress was pushed back to September due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zifa also has to explain how it electronically transferred money from its account to the same account as purported by the association.

Kachere also said it was difficult for them to prove that money was actually paid.

“If the Appeals Committee had its own account to run, this money should have been deposited into that particular account, but unfortunately we don’t have one and it makes it difficult for us to verify,” said Kachere.

Banda’s lawyer Munyaradzi Nzarayapenga of Dube-Banda, Nzarayapenga and Partners has demanded the bank statement that shows actual movement of money.

“I haven’t been briefed to the contrary by my legal team, we still don’t have the bank statement we asked for,” said Banda yesterday. The Chronicle

The PSL’s Twitter Kings launched their online shop on Tuesday night to service the club’s followers around the world.

Chiefs have been trendsetters on the digital platform, as they were the first club to have its Twitter handle verified two years ago, edging the PSL old guard of Dynamos, Highlanders and Caps United.
