Controversial tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo has confirmed that he will proceed with plans to buy a new team bus for Dynamos FC despite the club failing to beat rivals CAPS United in Sunday’s Harare Derby.

Dynamos lost the highly anticipated clash 2-1 at Rufaro Stadium, a result that initially appeared to end hopes of securing the luxury 65-seater bus Chivayo had promised during an interview on Capitalk FM last week.

The businessman had publicly pledged to purchase the vehicle if DeMbare defeated CAPS United.

However, in a lengthy statement released after the match, Chivayo said he would still honour the commitment and additionally reward Dynamos players with a US$50,000 cash gift.

He instructed the club’s management to immediately contact his lawyer, Sikhumbuzo Mpofu, so arrangements for the bus purchase could begin.

Chivayo stressed that the gesture should not be viewed as a formal sponsorship arrangement but rather as appreciation for the club’s supporters and the atmosphere created during the derby.

Much of his statement, however, focused less on the match itself and more on the hostile reception he received from sections of the crowd.

During the game, some CAPS United supporters chanted insults directed at Chivayo and Scott Sakupwanya, owner of Scottland FC.

They sang “mbavha mbiri chete dzatakavenga – Chivayo naScott.” Translated from Shona, the fans chanted “only two thieves we hate – Chivayo and Scott”.

The chants accused the pair of corruption, reflecting criticism that has frequently followed both businessmen due to their growing influence in Zimbabwean football and business circles.

Chivayo said he was surprised by what he described as ridicule and mockery over his promise to support Dynamos.

He insisted he would not withdraw his offer simply because the team failed to win, saying he intended to remain true to his word regardless of the outcome.

In his statement, Chivayo also criticised Zimbabweans whom he accused of failing to celebrate successful local figures, claiming he receives more respect internationally than at home.

Referencing a biblical proverb about a prophet lacking honour in his own country, he argued that some critics resent his wealth and success.

He concluded the message with a direct appeal for recognition, writing: “Put some respect on my name.”

The businessman also sparked discussion online after describing Dynamos — founded in 1963 — as “the next best thing” established that year after ZANU-PF.

Chivayo, whose fortune has largely been linked to government contracts, has become increasingly visible in Zimbabwean football through financial support for clubs including Highlanders FC and Scottland FC.
