A man suspected of opening fire near a high-profile Washington event attended by Donald Trump has been identified by several U.S. media organizations as a 31-year-old engineer from California, though authorities have yet to formally confirm his identity.
The incident unfolded Saturday evening outside the venue hosting the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, a gathering known for attracting prominent political and media figures. Chaos erupted after gunshots were reported near the ballroom.
Shortly after the incident, Trump posted an image on social media showing a handcuffed suspect lying face down on the floor. Multiple outlets, citing law enforcement sources, named the individual as Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California.
Public records and online profiles appear to align with that identification. A LinkedIn account under the name “Cole Allen” features a photo resembling the man in Trump’s post and describes him as a mechanical engineer and computer science graduate based in the Los Angeles area. The profile also highlights his involvement in independent game development and teaching.
According to available information, Allen earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2017. He was reportedly active in campus groups, including the Caltech Christian Fellowship and a Nerf Club. A commencement program from California State University Dominguez Hills lists a “Cole T. Allen” among its 2025 graduates, suggesting he recently completed a master’s degree in computer science.
Online activity linked to Allen includes posts about a self-developed indie video game titled “Bohrdom,” described as a non-violent, skill-based fighting game inspired by chemistry concepts. He also worked part-time as an instructor at C2 Education, a tutoring company that recognized him as “teacher of the month” in late 2024.
Authorities say the suspect was apprehended at the scene and is expected to appear in court Monday to face charges related to firearms and assault. Officials reported that he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Police indicated he had no prior record with Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department.
Trump told reporters that investigators are treating the suspect as acting alone and said his motive remains unclear. “My impression is he was a lone wolf,” Trump stated, adding that he believed the individual was mentally unstable.
Federal agents, including members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, were seen conducting a search of a residence in Torrance believed to be connected to the suspect. The property was secured by law enforcement, with flashing lights illuminating the neighborhood into the evening.
Neighbors told reporters they had seen Allen at the home in recent days. Additional background reported by NBC News indicates he attended Pacific Lutheran High School in the Los Angeles area, where he played volleyball. A former teammate described him as highly intelligent and calm, calling him a “borderline genius” who excelled academically with little effort.
Records also show that Allen was registered to vote without a declared party affiliation. Federal Election Commission filings reviewed by AFP indicate that a person with the same name and employer contributed a small donation to a political group supporting Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.
Investigators continue to examine the suspect’s background and possible motives as the case develops.
