Uncertainty grows over negotiations as Iran rejects new talks and tensions persist in Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has said a peace deal with Iran will be reached “relatively quickly,” despite growing uncertainty surrounding ongoing negotiations.

Speaking ahead of a looming ceasefire deadline on Wednesday, Trump insisted he was not under pressure to secure an agreement, even as diplomatic efforts appear to be stalling.

The next phase of talks remains unclear, with a US delegation led by Vice-President JD Vance expected to travel to Pakistan soon, according to a source familiar with the matter. However, no official timeline has been confirmed.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have cast doubt on the process, stating that Tehran currently has “no plans” to participate in another round of negotiations in Islamabad.

Key sticking points

One major obstacle remains the ongoing US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.

Tensions escalated further after US forces reportedly attacked and seized an Iranian cargo ship over the weekend, intensifying the standoff.

Iran has made clear that any progress in talks will depend on guarantees around freedom of navigation and the lifting of restrictions affecting its shipping.

Regional tensions persist

At the same time, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon remains in place.

The truce, which began last Friday and is set to last 10 days, has brought only limited relief, with ongoing tensions and sporadic incidents raising concerns about its durability.

Outlook uncertain

With diplomatic efforts facing setbacks and tensions persisting across multiple fronts, the path to a comprehensive peace agreement remains unclear.

While Trump maintains that a deal is imminent, conflicting positions from Tehran and continued military pressure in the region suggest that negotiations could face further delays.
