Highlanders FC’s struggles in front of goal continued as they were held to a goalless draw by ZPC Kariba FC at Barbourfields Stadium, extending their winless start to the season to seven matches.
Despite controlling large periods of the game and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Highlanders once again failed to convert their dominance into victory, leaving fans frustrated at the final whistle.
The hosts started brightly and nearly found an early breakthrough when Rainsome Pavari broke into space inside the opening minutes, but his heavy touch let him down at a crucial moment.
Highlanders maintained the pressure, with Nomore Chinyerere attempting a long-range effort that drifted wide before Mongameli Tshuma set up Benjamin Adeogun, who fired over the bar when well positioned.
Chances continued to come for Bosso, but the finishing touch remained elusive.
Adeogun forced a save from goalkeeper Future Sibanda midway through the first half, while a series of set-pieces and attacking moves failed to produce the breakthrough. Even a dangerous delivery from Kudakwashe Mahachi late in the half went unanswered in the box.
The pattern continued after the break, with Highlanders pushing forward and ZPC Kariba holding firm.
Isaac Ngoma came close with a header that narrowly missed the target, while Never Rauzhi and Mbeba also threatened as the home side camped in the opposition half.
However, Sibanda proved to be the standout performer, producing a number of crucial saves to deny Highlanders and secure a point for the visitors.
Late efforts, including a chance for Shelton Moyo, failed to change the outcome as Highlanders were left to reflect on another missed opportunity.
Head coach Benjani Mwaruwari acknowledged the frustration, particularly given the team’s continued inability to convert chances.
“The players are hurting because they want that win. Sometimes when you become desperate, it becomes difficult. We need to improve in the final third,” he said.
While Highlanders remain unbeaten, their inability to secure victories is becoming a growing concern as the season progresses.
For ZPC Kariba, the result was a disciplined defensive effort.
Coach Newton Mashipe praised his team’s organisation and resilience after withstanding sustained pressure.
“We knew they would come at us strongly, but the players stuck to the plan and defended well,” he said.
The draw leaves Highlanders searching for their first win of the campaign, while ZPC Kariba will take confidence from a hard-earned point on the road.
