Dynamos held by FC Platinum as missed chance costs them top spot

Glamour Boys settle for draw at Rufaro despite second-half fightback, leaving title race wide open

Dynamos FC missed a golden opportunity to climb to the top of the league table after being held to a 1-1 draw by FC Platinum at Rufaro Stadium.

The result extends Dynamos’ unbeaten run this season but will feel like a setback, as victory would have seen them overtake early pace-setters in the title race.

FC Platinum struck first in the opening half through Garikayi Dematsika, who powered in a header from an Eric Manokore corner to give the visitors the advantage.

Dynamos responded after the interval, with Abel Gwatidzo converting from the penalty spot early in the second half to bring the hosts level following sustained attacking pressure.

Despite pushing forward in search of a winner, Dynamos were unable to find the decisive goal, with FC Platinum holding firm to secure a valuable away point.

Opportunities fell at both ends. Leeroy Mavhunga tested the goalkeeper with a long-range effort before the break, while Dematsika came close to doubling his tally shortly after halftime when his strike rattled the crossbar.

Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe expressed frustration with his side’s performance, particularly in midfield.

“We are pleased to remain unbeaten, but the performance was below our expectations,” he said, noting that his team struggled to follow tactical instructions.

Mangombe credited second-half adjustments for the improvement that led to the equaliser but admitted defensive lapses remain a concern, especially from set pieces.

“We knew their threat at the near post, yet we still conceded. That is something we must fix,” he added.

The absence of captain Shadreck Nyahwa was also felt, particularly in leadership, although the coach acknowledged that overall team performance fell short.

For FC Platinum, coach Joel Luphaphla praised his team’s effort but pointed to a lack of composure as a key issue.

“We worked hard and executed our plan well, but we need to be calmer in crucial moments,” he said, referencing the penalty that allowed Dynamos back into the game.

The draw leaves Dynamos still in contention near the top of the table, while FC Platinum continue their search for consistency away from home.
