HARARE – Prominent Ruwa businessman Joseph Mutangadura, popularly known as “Mutangaz” was shot and killed in the early hours of Monday morning during a suspected armed robbery at his Lisheen Estate farmhouse on the eastern outskirts of Harare.
According to police, Mutangadura was attacked by a group of seven armed men who allegedly demanded money before shooting him.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, one in the stomach and five to the chest and later died from his injuries. His safe was reportedly found open after the incident.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the murder, saying an official statement would be issued later on Monday.
His son, Munyaradzi Mutangadura, said that he received a distress call just after midnight. “I was called at 12.26am. I don’t know the exact time when the incident occurred. We managed to take him to the hospital here in Ruwa. He was unconscious,” he said.
Family members said Mutangadura pleaded with the assailants to allow him to fetch money from his abattoir in exchange for his life, but his request was ignored.
Mutangadura was a well-known entrepreneur in Ruwa, where he operated several businesses including Mutangaz Hideout, Mutangaz Panyama, and Lisheen Estate.
He was also a significant player in Zimbabwe’s meat value chain, running butcheries and abattoir services that connected rural livestock producers with urban consumers.
His enterprises provided a critical market for both communal and commercial farmers, sustaining many households across the country.
Police investigations into the robbery and murder are underway.
Zimbabwe has faced a surge in armed robberies in recent years. Last month, two notorious armed robbers, Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu, were arrested in South Africa on allegations of being linked to the US$4 million Bulawayo Ecobank heist.
