Two opposition Members of Parliament have accused suspected Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives of assaulting them following an altercation over a parking bay at a government complex in Mutare.
Highfield MP Donald Mabvudzi and Goodrich Chimbaira, the MP for Zengeza East, both from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), said the incident occurred shortly after they concluded a meeting with the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Misheck Mugadza.
According to the legislators, they discovered several men allegedly deflating the tyres of their vehicle as they prepared to leave the government offices.
They said a confrontation followed over the parking space, during which they were allegedly assaulted by the suspected intelligence operatives.
The two MPs were in Mutare on official parliamentary business at the time of the incident.
Following the alleged assault, Mabvudzi and Chimbaira received medical treatment at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.
They also reported the matter to police, with the case recorded at Mutare Central Police Station under reference number RRB 6744208.
The alleged attack comes against the backdrop of ongoing political tensions surrounding the recently enacted Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act.
Both Mabvudzi and Chimbaira were vocal opponents of the constitutional amendment, which extends the terms of the President and Parliament to seven years and removes direct presidential elections.
At the time of publication, there had been no official response from either the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) or the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) regarding the allegations.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault remain unclear, and the incident has not been independently verified.
