HARARE – Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers have been banned from entering betting shops while wearing their uniforms.

National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the move is aimed at preserving the image of the police force.

Speaking over the weekend at the National Forum on Responsible Betting, hosted by H-Metro in collaboration with the Lotteries and Gaming Board in Harare, Nyathi said:

“Seeing law enforcers in gambling environments in their uniforms does not give a good picture of the country’s police force.”

Images of uniformed police officers inside betting shops have recently circulated on various social media platforms.

This left many criticising professionalism within the force.

While the ban has now been made public, it remains to be seen whether officers will comply with the directive.

Many within the force have reportedly turned to betting, driven by Zimbabwe’s ongoing economic hardships.
