HARARE – Joanah Mamombe, the opposition MP for Harare West has called on Parliament to pass laws that ban certain breeds of dogs in Zimbabwe after one of her constituents, Samuel Machara (39) was mauled to death by a Pitbull dog in New Bluff Hill.
“We have learnt with, sadness, the death of a #HarareWest constituency resident, after he was attacked by a Pitbull dog, that was roaming freely in the street. #MHSRIP.
“It’s time as the legislature, we pass Breed specific legislation which restricts and bans certain dog breeds,” Mamombe posted on X (formerly Twitter.
Former Deputy Mayor of the City of Harare, Kudzai Kadzombe, also tweeted that “Ì have called the SPCA and they have taken 4 dogs from the property 2 pitbulls, 1 rottweiler and a hungarian mastiff.
“I would like to inform the public that the pitbull dog involved in the tragic attack that led to the death of a man in Bluffhill has been euthanized by SPCA, citizens are reminded to ensure responsible pet ownership. My sincere condolences to the residents family.”

According to reports the dog was known to jump a half-door wall and had previously raised concerns among residents.
Police have arrested 40-year-old Mike Mupinga, the dogs’ owner, on allegations of culpable homicide.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Machara’s body was discovered near Mupinga’s home with visible dog bite wounds.
The body has since been taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for a postmortem as investigations continue.
