Zimbabwe and Botswana Under-20s share the spoils in AFCON qualifier

MAPUTO – The Zimbabwe U-20 national team were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Botswana in their opening match of the CAF Under-20 AFCON | COSAFA Qualifiers in Maputo, Mozambique on Thursday.

Enock Moyo, a promising midfielder with Premier Soccer League side Bikita Minerals, broke the deadlock at the half hour mark.

His goal from well struck right footed half-volley from inside the box, put the Young Warriors ahead going into the break leading by a goal to nil.

The goal gave Zimbabwe an advantage against a relatively dominant Botswana side.

However, Zimbabwe’s advantage was short lived as Botswana found the equaliser in the 75th minute.

Taking advantage of Zimbabwe’s numerical disadvantage after defender Mvelo Khoza suffered an injury, the Young Zebras capitalized on a counter attack to level matters.

Both teams had chances to claim victory in the closing stages of the match, but the woodwork denied them.

Botswana hit the upright in the dying minutes while Zimbabwe’s effort from a free kick in stoppage time came the crossbar.

The draw leaves both teams with a point each in the group stage.
