NDOLA, ZAMBIA – It was a good weekend for Dynamos Football Club from Zimbabwe after they gallantly fought to a 0-0 draw with ZESCO United of Zambia to qualify for the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup 1-0 on aggregate.
The match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday came on the backdrop of Dynamos beating ZESCO 1-0 in the first leg played in the Botswana capital Gaborone last week.
Zimbabwe does not have a single stadium that meets the requirements of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and so home games for clubs in continental fixtures are being hosted in foreign countries.
The 30th minute goal goal by Tanaka Shandirwa in the first leg has ultimately been enough power Dynamos who are now coached by the returning Lloyd “Mablanyo” Chigove.
The form of the team in the Premier League had not inspired their fans into believing they could go through but Chigove had insisted in his pre-match press conferences that the team had the necessary pedigree to go through.
The CAF Confederation Cup, known as the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup for sponsorship purposes, is an annual association football club competition established in 2004 from a merger of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners’ Cup and organized by CAF.
Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions. It is the second-tier competition of African club football, ranking below the CAF Champions League.
The winner of the tournament faces the winner of the aforementioned competition in the following season’s CAF Super Cup.
The current champions are Zamalek of Egypt who have won the title two times while the record holders are CS Sfaxien of Tunisia who have bagged it three times.
