SOUTH AFRICA – At a time elimination seemed difficult than progression, the Zimbabwe Warriors have shockingly crashed out of the 2024 COSAFA Cup competition.
This comes after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Kenya at Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) today (Tuesday).
The defeat marked a disappointing end to a campaign for the Warriors who were the favourites to reach the last four having led Group B with six points since the competition began last week.
Kenya secured their place in the semi finals thanks to second-half goals from Benson Omalla and Austin Odhiambo.
Odhiambo opened the scoring in the 54th minute, before Omalla sealed the victory for the Harambee Stars in the 72nd minute.
The defeat comes as a major blow for the Warriors, who were heavily favored to progress as Group B winners.
This was after comfortable victories against Comoros (1-0) and Zambia (2-0) in their opening matches.
The Jairos Tapera coached side only needed a single point against Kenya to secure top spot in the group.
Tables turned dramatically as the East Africans handed Zimbabwe their first defeat of the tournament which also sent the Warriors packing.
This defeat also extends Zimbabwe’s winless run against Kenya.
The Warriors have never managed to defeat the East African nation in their three encounters.
