Zim PSL legend and former Dynamos striker Norman Maroto dies aged 40

HARARE – The Zimbabwean football fraternity has been plunged into mourning after waking up to the devastating news of the passion on of former Dynamos FC striker Norman Maroto (40) on Friday morning.

Maroto died at a private hospital in Harare, where he was reportedly admitted and put on life support.

The former prolific striker was now working as the Communications Officer for the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) along with his former Dynamos teammates Desmond Maringwa and Wonder Sithole.

FUZ confirmed his death on their social media platforms: “FUZ would like to notify friends and all football stakeholders of the untimely passing of our Communications Officer, Norman Maroto.

“Mourners are gathered at No. 2360 Tynwald South, Harare. More information will be shared in the near future,” they wrote.

Lumumba as Maroto was nicknamed during his playing days, is the last striker to score over 20 goals in a season in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) when he was at Gunners FC.

Maroto broke through to the Dynamos first team when he was a teenager.

This was during the days of the Harare giants’ popular squad named “The Kidznet” under the tutelage of Moses ‘Bambo’ Chunga.

It was at a time he was still a student at Churchill Boys High in Harare.

Apart from Dynamos and Gunners, Maroto also played for Motor Action.

His career spanned over a decade.
