Falcon College student dies in bus accident coming from rugby tourney

BULAWAYO – A Falcon College Upper Six student, Aidan O’Donovan died in a school bus accident which occured along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway on Sunday.

The accident occurred while the bus was reportedly carrying 56 students who were returning from a rugby tournament at St. George’s College in Harare.

According to reports, O’Donovan was trapped beneath the bus after the accident, which reportedly took place just before a tollgate.

Falcon College Chairman of the Board of Governors, Phillip Whaley, issued a heartfelt statement expressing his deepest condolences to the O’Donovan family following the tragedy.

“Parents and Guardians, Following the initial communication sent out, it is with deepest sadness that I write to advise you of the passing of Aidan O’Donovan (Upper Sixth, Tredgold) in the bus accident this afternoon.

“There are no adequate words at a time like this, and we are all deeply affected.

“We have chartered a flight for Aidan and Lana’s parents, and they are en route to Bulawayo now. Please keep the O’Donovan family, and everyone who loved Aidan in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

“Bradley Wentzel suffered a broken arm and is at the Mater Dei hospital in Bulawayo with his parents. There are a few children and staff with minor cuts and injuries. They are also at the Mater Dei being treated and checked out.”

Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart took to social media to offer his condolences to Aidan’s family and friends, wishing a speedy recovery to all who were injured.

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic death of Aidan O’Donovan of Falcon College in a bus accident today. My condolences are sent to Aidan’s family and to all at Falcon College. 

“My prayers are with those other students and staff members who were injured in the same accident,” wrote Coltart on his Facebook page.
