Zimbabwe national team vice captain Marshall Munetsi’s club Stade Reims has donated US$32 637 to the Mabvuku born midfield maestro’s foundation for his service to the French side in the 2023/24 season.
Reims paid the amount as part of their contractual obligation with Munetsi.
Munetsi and Stade Reims entered into an agreement that the Ligue 1 side will donate €100 for every kilometer ran by the Zimbabwe international during play.
The clause was agreed in June 2023 when the 27-year-old extended his stay at Reims to 2027.
“We added a new clause in his contract, a kind of mileage bonus. It was important to us to promote this type of personal initiative.
“It is customary to caricature football and the professional footballer as being disconnected from the world around him. Marshall (Munetsi), through his actions, helps to silence certain prejudices,” confirmed the Reims director general Mathieu Lacour.
As a result, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder covered 301 kilometers this season, translating to €30, 100.
Reims announced through their social media platforms on Wednesday.
“301km this season for Marshall Munetsi! For every kilometer traveled by the Zimbabwean midfielder, the Stade de Reims donates €100 to its Foundation,” Reims posted on X.
“The Marshall Munetsi Foundation is committed to promoting access to education for children in the country.”
Munetsi also donates 10 percent of his salary to his Mabvuku based foundation.
