Pasuwa snubs Zimbabwe for Malawi? FAM planning to appoint him for U-23s

Must Try

MALAWI – Football Association of Malawi (FAM) could finally snatch the signature of coach Kalisto Pasuwa after several attempts that previously hit a snag.

This comes after reports coming from Malawi suggest the veteran gaffer has been appointed to lead the Malawi U23s.

According to an online publication, The Nation, FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda confirmed Pasuwa’s appointment for the Flames U-23s.

However, Gunda also indicated that “The nitty-gritties are yet to be finalised, but that is how we are proceeding.”

“Since we will team to the Cosafa Cup as the senior team will be busy with the [2026] World Cup qualifiers, Pasuwa has been appointed to take charge of the team. We will be sending a developmental side,” Gunda revealed.

Despite Gunda’s confirmation, Pasuwa’s bosses at his club FC Nyasa Big Bullets chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda professed ignorance.

“Of course, we have heard about it from the grapevine, but FAM has not approached us,” Nyirenda told the same publication.

“Should they approach us, we’ll have to look at the terms because Pasuwa is on a running contract.

“What needs to be taken into consideration is that we are on a mission to defend the quadruple. So, when they approach us, we’ll have to see if the move will not affect our plans.”

The Nation also reported that the ex-Dynamos coach “Pasuwa himself declined to comment on the issue”.

This comes at a time Pasuwa reportedly turned down the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee (NC)’s offer to lead the Warriors.

It is not the first time that Pasuwa has been linked with the Malawian national team job.

In 2023 he was tipped to take over as Malawi’s senior national team interim coach for the remainder of then 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Prior to that, he was also rumored to have been given a role by FAM of the technical director when Malawi played at the 2021 AFCON competition.
