Zimbabwe football: A case of own goals and shooting ourselves in the foot?

Must Try

Without doubt, Zimbabwe is a football loving nation, her people love the most followed sport in the world to the bone.

But as it stands, the country’s football problems are just too much to handle for these Zimbabwean football enthusiasts.

To imagine the local game is faced with a double challenge, eleven days before the 2024 PSL season commences really makes one sick.

1. Stadium Crisis: The PSL’s start has been delayed due to lack of suitable venues.

Originally, the league was scheduled for 2 March, but was shelved to 9 March earlier this week due to the ongoing stadium crisis.

2. Promotion Impasse: ZIFA seems too reluctant to resolve the ongoing dispute between Tenax FC and Bikita Minerals for promotion to the top flight league.

This means that currently we have no team from the Eastern Region Division One League, one of the four feeders of the country’s top flight league, the PSL.

As it stands, the 18 team league has 17 teams, until ZIFA gives its verdict, who joins the ‘big boys’ in the PSL between Tenax and Bikita Minerals.

The ongoing impasse is affecting the planning of other teams ahead of the new campaign, even worse, of the involved teams.

Looking at the period we are left with for the PSL season to kick off, these two pressing issues dampen fan enthusiasm.

In fact, the issues hinders the growth of the local game which desperately needs to attract numbers and potential sponsors especially after facing challenges after the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a result, addressing these challenges is crucial to attracting fans back to stadiums and ensuring the local game is marketable.
