HARARE – Karikoga Kaseke, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s tourism industry, passed away on Thursday morning at a private hospital in Harare at the age of 62.
Irene Kaseke, one of his wives, confirmed the news to the State Media.
He had suffered a stroke in 2018 and retired from his position as CEO of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) in 2021.
Born in 1948 in Masvingo, Kaseke’s passion for tourism stemmed from his early experiences surrounded by Zimbabwe’s natural beauty. After his education, he embarked on a career in hospitality, working in various hotels and lodges across the country.
In the 1980s, Kaseke established “Hakuna Matata Tours,” a travel agency that specialised in cultural tourism and promoting unique Zimbabwean experiences. He actively advocated for including marginalized communities in the tourism sector, ensuring they benefited from its economic opportunities.
Kaseke was appointed in various government positions, including Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment.
During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping the tourism industry through several initiatives.
He is praised for championing sustainable tourism practices that emphasise environmental conservation and responsible development.
He is also hailed for contributing to the establishment of the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, dedicated to wildlife conservation and community development.
Kaseke actively promoted Zimbabwe as a tourist destination at international events and conferences, attracting foreign investment and increasing tourist arrivals.
