Notorious ex-cop arrested in Mozambique after three days on the run

Police in Mozambique, working with their Zimbabwean counterparts, have arrested Jaison Muvhevhi, a former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer who shot and killed three people in Wedza last Friday afternoon.

Muvhevhi went to an apostolic sect church gathering in Wedza on Friday at 1430 hours and fatally shot dead a prophet. He then pounced on police officers who had reacted to the shooting and suddenly shot dead the Officer in Charge of Wedza and another policeman (who is critically injured).

He allegedly drove his vehicle, a Toyota Allion, new shape, white in colour, registration number AFW 7641 and went to Mukamba Business Centre where he shot another person dead and drove away. He was on the run over the weekend.

He was arrested by police in Mozambique who were working with their Zimbabwean counterparts.

He was apprehended in Manica Province, just a few minutes after crossing into the neighbouring country.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

“Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police press statement on the shooting incident in which three people were shot dead while another person was seriously injured on 13th January 2023 in Wedza.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the murder suspect, Jaison Muvhevhi has been arrested while trying to cross into Mozambique this morning,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, the victims of the murder have been identified as Crispen Mubvana Kanerusine (62) of Zinzombe Village, Wedza, Inspector Maxwell Hove (43) of ZRP Wedza Camp and Munashe Mujanhi (20) of Mujanhi Village, Wedza.

The injured is, Detective Constable Tendai Mugova.
