Ramandeep Dhaliwal (34) and Kehar Hayer (55), both of Spencefield Lane, Evington, appeared before city magistrates on Wednesday charged with conspiracy to murder Mr Ndlovu.

They were remanded to Leicester Crown Court for a plea and file preparation hearing later this month.

Peter, who played in England between 1991 and 2004, also made 100 appearances for Zimbabwe, scoring 38 goals.

He is now team manager of Mamelodi Sundowns, a Premier League club in South Africa.

He praised Leicestershire Police for their “professional” work and also singled out the Zimbabwean expat community in Leicester and across the country for the support shown to Promise’s widow, Christine and her children.

Speaking from Mamelodi, on the outskirts of Pretoria, South Africa, he said: “I heard the news on Sunday. I was just preparing for a game when I was told my sister Christine’s husband had been killed.

“I had to carry on with my preparations, but I didn’t take it very good. My sister is a mother of two and I was worried that she would be alone with her children without any support.

“But the Zimbabwean community and other members of the community are there for them. Whenever things happen, good or bad, the community come together.”

He added: “She and Promise were happily married. Her two children are from a previous relationship – they did not have any children together.

“I never met Promise, (but) I love my sister to bits. When you lose someone you are so close to every day and you’re not going to see them again, it is very tough to deal with.”

“There were 11 in our family, six brothers and five sisters although we have lost two brothers and one sister. We are very close as a family.”

He added: “I am still waiting to hear what is happening with the funeral and I plan to come over for it, depending on club commitments.

“I want to thank Leicestershire Police who are doing a fantastic job and for dealing with my sister, they are very professional.”

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and three other men were detained on suspicion of conspiracy to murder on Tuesday. They are all still in custody.
