Chatunga iPhone ‘thieves’ further remanded
Three men accused of stealing an iphone 6 belonging to President Robert Mugabe’s son, Bellarmine Chatunga, appeared in court yesterday for their routine remand hearing.
Victor Josam, 26, of Western Triangle; Tendai Makambaire, 30, of Budiriro 2; and Kelvin Mwandayi, 27, of Stoneridge, appeared before Harare magistrate Elijah Makomo.
They were remanded to March 29 to enable the completion of their docket.
They are out on $100 bail each and were ordered to continue residing at their present addresses.
The trio denies stealing the iPhone, and all claim they bought the mobile phone.
It is the State’s case that on November 7 at St John’s College, Josam, Makambaire, Mwandayi and another accused person who is still at large, allegedly hatched a plan to steal from students.
The accused persons allegedly targeted Chatunga after noticing that he had an iphone 6 plus.
Chatunga and his friend Honour Mukudzei Rwodzi left for the gents to relieve themselves.
The court heard that when they arrived at the toilets, Chatunga gave Rwodzi the phone while he went inside.
Josam and his accomplices then approached Rwodzi and misrepresented to him that they had been instructed by Chatunga to get the phone.
Rwodzi was convinced by the accused persons and handed over Chatunga’s phone, the court heard.
It was further alleged that Josam and his accomplices disappeared into the crowd and were never seen again. The matter was reported to the police before a follow-up was made, leading to the accused persons’ arrest. Daily News
