SOUTH AFRICA – The Hawks have foiled an assassination that could have netted a suspect R34-million from an insurance policy.
In a statement on Wednesday‚ the Hawks revealed that a Durban businessman hired an accomplice to help locate a hitman to kill his business partner. The Hawks then got involved together with Crime Intelligence.
An undercover policeman presented himself to the businessman’s accomplice as a hitman‚ and was hired. He was given a vehicle‚ a police blue light and a police communication radio.
The Hawks staged the murder and the businessman’s accomplice paid them R10000 within minutes of the “job being done”.
The accomplice was arrested‚ and he led the Hawks to the home of the businessman.
The businessman was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol.
The two will appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday‚ facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder‚ possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as possession of police equipment.
The Hawks also revealed that the businessman was involved in an earlier attempt to kill his partner. In July the partner was shot several times in what appeared to be an attempted hijacking. He survived the attack.
In yet another incident‚ the businessman sent three assailants to kill his partner’s father-in-law‚ who managed to wrestle with the attackers until they fled. RDM Newswire
