HARARE – A 27-year-old fuel station attendant was left fighting for his life in Harare after a gang of six men savagely beat him up using axes and batons at a Total garage in the residential area of Westgate.
Cassiano Tafadzwa Gomo, who works the 6pm to 6am shift, was left with serious head injuries after the attack around 2am on the 11th of October.
“I was sitting at our waiting station and a group of men, 6 of them scaled over the wall and started attacking me with axes and batons. I was struck with an axe on the head and I fell to the ground then I was struck again.
“When he (one of the robbers) raised the axe for the third strike I started fighting him off with a jacket I was wearing. This time I was struck on my head and on my right thumb,” Gomo told Nehanda Radio.
“The guys kept shouting that we should get inside the shop. Then a car pulled in to the forecourt and my colleagues shouted for help and the men ran away the same way they came. My colleagues called for an ambulance then I was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital where I was put in the resuscitation ward,” he said.
No money was stolen during the raid and Gomo is still unsure about the motive for the attack. The neurosurgeon who looked at his scans prescribed that he get stitches.
Visitors at Parirenyatwa Hospital who wanted to see Gomo were being carefully screened to protect him incase those who attacked him thought of finishing him off.
