Kalado speaks on show flop

By Problem Masau

Smarting from an embarrassing flop, Jamaican singer Kalado, born Eton Gordon, has finally broken his  silence on his Zimbabwean show.

The bruised singer’s management has released a statement, claiming that the Zimbabwean media had connived to give visiting Jamaican artistes negative publicity while propping local musicians.

In a press release, Kalado’s management questioned the truthfulness of the reports, which they claim merely continue a trend of bad publicity for Jamaican entertainers performing in Zimbabwe.

The trend is in direct contradiction to positive reviews of local Zimbabwean acts on the same shows, Kalado’s management said.

Citing an example, the release noted that a journalist writing for The Zimbabwe Mail asked the question: “Are these so called international artistes worth bringing in the country, in the face of such flops? In previous years, local artistes have outperformed their Jamaican counterparts at several gigs. At one time, another Jamaican artiste, Popcaan, was literally reduced to a curtain-raiser by Winky D. Locals feel they are being short-changed.”

Veteran Jamaican singer, Mr Vegas, who had a less-than-welcoming experience on stage in Zimbabwe,  also questioned the trend.

According to a press release, Mr Vegas alleged: “Of late, Jamaican reggae & dancehall artists are getting some bad feedback after performances in Africa, even stones were allegedly thrown at Luciano. Then, there were the media reports: “Mavado flopped, Vegas failed to deliver, Assasin misses target”.

Meanwhile, the press release indicated that Kalado was not bothered by the negative feedback.

“With that experience behind him, Kalado is settling back into the musical flow, as he continues to assure fans that good does, in fact, ‘bring life’, and that he takes none of this “person”, the management team said.

However, while Kalado blamed the ‘conspiracy theory’ of Zimbabwean media trying to suppress Jamaican artistes, revellers who were at the Old Hararians Sports Club agree that the musician had objects thrown at him after a shoddy day in office.

“The Jamaican artiste resorted to porn dancing after realising that he was no match with the local artistes. His sex gyrating did not help things as cans were thrown at him. He was only saved by Tocky Vibes,” said Arnold Hudza, who also attended the show.

There is even a video circulating on social media showing the rising Jamaican chanter being ‘baptised’ in a flurry of missiles. Beenie Man has proved to be one of the few Jamaican artistes to have put up a splendid performance in the country when he graced the Lion Lager Festival. The Zimbabwe Mail
