Acting Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Richard Swene said investigations so far had revealed that the schoolboy, Malvern Nyangani, 18, was “excluded” from two schools in 2012 when he was in Form Five on disciplinary grounds.

Exclusion is when a pupil is removed from school but is permitted to seek a place to study in a different school. “Investigations so far reveal that the boy has a history of indiscipline and was excluded from two schools for bullying and disobedience to school rules,” said Swene.

Nyangani was said to have been excluded from Dangamvura High School and Mutare Boys High within the first term in 2012 for bullying other pupils and was grounded at home for the rest of the year.

He enrolled at Milton High in 2013 and his alleged misdemeanours persisted as he fought with a Mathematics teacher Lawrence Ndebele whom he left with a bloodied nose.

Both the pupil and the teacher were warned and cautioned by the police following the incident that was triggered by a decision by Ndebele to beat up Nyangani for wearing gloves.

The Chronicle has since established that following the fight, Milton High School authorities suspended Nyangani for 14 days and he was only back in class yesterday.

Swene said the Primary and Secondary Education Ministry is yet to decide on what action, if any, would be taken against both the pupil and the teacher. “If any or both are found on the wrong side of the law, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with circular 35 for the pupil and statutory instrument No 1 of 2000 as amended for the teacher,” he said.

Swene said investigations took longer than expected as authorities had to interview a lot of witnesses. Chronicle
