The MDC-T led by founding president Morgan Tsvangirai put on a show of support on Sunday as thousands of supporters packed the Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfields, Harare on Sunday for what the party had dubbed their Africa Day Rally.
Tsvangirai had been billed to be the main speaker but failed to attend. He later issued a statement saying “because of illness, the doctor ordered me to take a rest. Those who attended tell me there was a huge crowd there and it is unfortunate that I failed to address the people.”
“I can’t wait to see the pictures from the rally and share them with you. I might be home recuperating but my thoughts are with the people of Zimbabwe who continue to brave the long and torturous journey to true freedom and democracy,” the statement from Tsvangirai added.

Meanwhile the Renewal faction of the MDC held their own rally in Masvingo on Sunday attended by an estimated 38 people. The low figures have seen the faction deny that they are holding rallies instead choosing to call them ‘meetings’ with their structures.

Faction leader Tendai Biti’s maiden rally at the beginning of the month in Mutare was attended by 50 people.
