MDC-T UK youth leader Try Mahachi, who was deported recently allegedly went bonkers and assaulted his wife and her lawyer Lison Ncube on Monday, before destroying property at the legal practitioner’s office. He also assaulted a client at the office.
The MDC-T UK youth leader has been charged with malicious damage to property after destroying furniture valued at $1,500.
Mahachi was reportedly angry that his wife, Marvelous, wanted to divorce him after he allegedly abandoned her in 2008 when he secured political asylum in the UK. After getting deported in February, he found his wife had moved on and was pregnant.
Mahachi snapped during a meeting that was called by the couple’s lawyers to discuss issues relating to the divorce. Sources close to the pair said Mahachi verbally abused and spat at his wife.
Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Abedinico Ncube confirmed the incident.
“We are handling a case in which a suspect allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife and her legal representative. The suspect is facing charges of malicious damage to property and assault.
“He is likely to appear in court tomorrow,” said Asst Insp Ncube.
The lawyer, Ncube, also confirmed the incident saying his client asked him to start divorce proceedings against the MDC-T member in 2012 because their marriage had irretrievably broken down.
“It was bit hectic on the day,” said the lawyer.
“He has signed affidavits admitting to the assault and has offered to pay for the damage at the office.”
According to police records, Mahachi and his mother Chengetai Mahachi signed affidavits admitting the assaults and paid admission of guilt fines.
Marvelous could not be reached for comment as her mobile phone went unanswered.
But a source said during the divorce meeting, Mahachi became abusive forcing the lawyers to postpone the meeting.
“As they were leaving the office, he suddenly turned on Lison, grabbed him by his necktie and slammed him against the wall. He slapped his pregnant wife and she fell on one of the conference tables and it splintered under the impact,” said a source.
Mahachi reportedly started throttling and pummeling Ncube, breaking more furniture. His relatives including his mother who were waiting at the reception joined in the fray.
“Mahachi who seemed possessed, attacked a client who was waiting to see one of the lawyers at the firm. The client has laid assault charges against him. He is being held at Bulawayo Central Police Station as we speak,” added the source. The Chronicle
