MASVINGO – Several Zanu PF officials are seeking the services of prophets and traditional healers in a desperate bid to land top posts at the party’s upcoming elective congress in December.

The bizarre revelation was made on Friday by Zanu PF Women’s League chairperson Oppah Muchinguri who was addressing a provincial inter-district conference at the Masvingo Polytechnic College.

“We will hold an elective congress this year. I hear some have already held their elections. Who told you to do so? Others are firing each other [from positions]. That kind of campaigning is not right,” said Muchinguri.

“Some are already saying we don’t want this official, we want that one; that causes hatred. Others are visiting prophets and traditional healers; it doesn’t work that way,” she said.

“We will give you dates for the congress so that we move our party ahead.”

It had been widely expected that the congress in December would elect Mugabe’s successor but it looks like the 90-year-old leader now wants to hang on to power. Mugabe has been leading Zanu PF since 1977 (over 37 years now.)

Seven years ago ‘diesel n’anga’ Rotina Mavhunga a.k.a Nomatter Tagarira fooled Mugabe’s entire cabinet into believing she could conjure pure diesel from rocks in Chinhoyi.

Mugabe convinced this could be the answer to the country’s fuel shortages deployed a high powered government delegation to investigate the claims.

During her trial Mavhunga stunned the court when she claimed the then State Security Minister Didymus Mutasa had withdrawn a farm gift to her after she refused to assist him ascend to the presidency in 2007.

The late political commentator Dr John Makumbe at the time said the story showed the true character of Zanu PF politicians.

‘They actually believe they are in power because their ancestors are keeping them there. They actually believe they deserve to be there because they have powerful totems and they believe their powerful totems will get them to be President and Vice President one day.”

‘And you see this goes against the grain of a modern state which requires scientific management, which requires reasoning and in fact it requires that you know what you are doing and not a powerful totem or a Gushungo, or something like that or some monkey which is keeping you in a Presidential or Ministerial position, it’s a lot of rubbish,’ Makumbe said.
